The Perch THE EPSILON BEta ChapTER OF CHI OMEGA AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT CHAPEL HILL FALL 2024 L ast month, a Wall Street Journal article highlighted the perception of sororities based on the presentation of their houses. Many universities even fund their sorority houses just as they do residential dorms due to the value those houses bring to college recruitment. Sorority recruitment is equally affected by the appearance and health of the universities' sorority houses. A Little Big Yellow History Epsilon Beta Chapter of Chi Omega is extremely fortunate to own our house and the property it is built on. Epsilon Beta sisters before us purchased and donated the family homes of Mr. Patterson and Mr. Woollen at 313 E. Franklin Street. What a glorious gift of generosity! Now is our chance to continue the amazing legacy that came before us. 100 Years Down, Looking to 100 More Wonderful things are happening at our fabulous Chi Omega house. It's exciting to see the progress working to ensure our exceptional home will be sustainable for centuries to come. For decades, Epsilon Beta's House Corporation Boards have fixed, replaced, painted, and redecorated to maintain our home's exceptional reputation for safety and beauty. As we celebrated a century on UNC's campus, our membership started discussing our responsibility to the sorority house we own. We are fortunate to have such a strong Chi Omega Chapter of 2,500 women who care deeply about the well-being of our 100-year-old house. The Progress of Our Restoration 1. Commercial HVAC has been ordered for Big Yellow to replace failing equipment. 2. Demolition has concluded for bedroom soffits. Now that ductwork is exposed, insulation will be installed and fire protection piping will be updated. This important equipment will be reframed with new soffits. 3. Our Swisher commercial dishwasher has been unreliable for two years, requiring constant maintenance. A larger version with a vented steam hood has been purchased to maintain superior sanitary levels for our over 200 Chi Omegas. 4. The kitchen's original small pantry has been inefficient for a decade, as our Chapter has grown to over 240 women. It will be enlarged to accommodate daily large meals. 5. The laundry room has needed restoration for many years. Walls will be insulated and exposed pipes, which in the past have had environmental concerns, will be covered. 6. The Riley Watkins Memorial Library is being lovingly prepared to host community engagement, team projects, and Bible study. It will receive new paint, reupholstered furniture, a study table, and new lighting. (Continued on page 3) ENSURING THE SUSTAINABILITY OF OUR HOME Give Back to the Sisterhood
