The WISE OLD OWL Sigma Chi University of Memphis PO Box 442100 Lawrence, KS 66044-2100 Address Service Requested C harlie Baker '96 was born in Memphis, Tennessee. He came straight to Memphis and knew before classes even started that he wanted to be a Sigma Chi. The summer before his freshman year, he attended a recruitment event where he met his future brothers for the first time and knew that was where he wanted to be. He accepted a bid in the fall and began on the path of brotherhood that would impact his life forever. Charlie recalls many fond memories from his years such as the amazing opportunity he had to be pinned by his father, Dennis Baker '67, during his initiation. In his years with the Chapter, Charlie was an active brother; he lived in the house, played intramural sports, and was one of the founders of the infamous spring river trip. He made friendships then that he still carries today, and he talks to his pledge brothers frequently. Charlie's son, Austin Baker '27, also joined Sigma Chi this past fall. Charlie had the distinct honor of being able to pin his son just as his father did for him, truly cementing the legacy of the Baker family at Epsilon Kappa. He spoke about the fact that 30 years after his father pledged Sigma Chi, he chose to do the same, and now almost 30 years after he pledged, his son has chosen Sigma Chi as well. The values of our fraternity and The Jordan Standard's impact on the lives of our brothers have truly been life-changing, leading three generations of a family to exactly where they needed to be. Since Austin's initiation, Charlie has continued to be involved in the Chapter and recently attended a parent's weekend hosted at the house. He was proud to walk our halls with his family and show them the history and legacy we have built together. After graduating from Memphis, Charlie went on to stay in Memphis and start a family. After Austin's birth, he got a job at Smith and Nephew, where he worked diligently and became a leader of men as their director of research and development. Charlie has truly exemplified everything it means to be a Sigma Chi and will continue to live his life in search of the ideals that we all work so hard to follow.
