THETA THETA CHAPTER OF SIGMA CHI FRATERNITY | UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN | FALL 2024 Updates from the House Corporation THETA THETA IS IN GREAT HANDS CHANGING OF THE GUARD After serving on the House Corporation for more than 35 years and as board president for the past 22 years, Dave Train '84 has decided to take a step back. Longtime board member Jerry Kocis '94 will take over as president, and the current board, including Dave, will continue to serve and support. The charge for the House Corporation will continue to be maintaining our property, providing undergraduates with the opportunity to join a brotherhood with lifelong benefits, and continuing our alumni's connection with 548 South State. Dave's tenure included many successes on behalf of the Chapter. Our house is more than 110 years old and in constant need of care. Dave oversaw two large renovation campaigns in 1999 and 2014, which allowed us to ensure a safe, structurally sound, and desirable house. Thank you to all of you who contributed! Separate from running campaigns, a big part of House Corporation's job is to meet regular repair and improvement needs. Dave excels at working with contractors, and we have benefited greatly from his understanding of the many aspects of structural and maintenance needs, negotiation, and project management. He has been a great custodian of your alumni contributions. A particularly proud moment for Theta Theta was in 2018 when Dave was honored by our International Fraternity with the Order of Constantine, "the highest honor for members who have committed years of exemplary service to the organization." The president at any time balances dealing with multiple parties, including the undergraduates, their parents, our alumni, the university, contractors, city of Ann Arbor code inspectors, our International Fraternity, other campus Greeks, and more. It is a volunteer position with unique challenges, but it is also quite rewarding. Dave has left tough shoes to fill, but our Chapter will still be in good hands. Jerry was chosen as consul by his brothers in 1994 and chaired our successful recolonization in 2009. He has a daughter at Michigan and is on campus regularly. If you haven't met him yet, you will have plenty of chances at fall football games! Our treasurer, Rick Miller, Emory '82, is continuing his 30-year stint on the board, and I also continue to serve as I have since 1989. In addition to this core crew, we enjoy contributions from Todd Halsted '84. STATE OF THE CHAPTER Our financial position is strong, we have a positive relationship with the undergraduates and our International Headquarters, and our house is still the best place to be on campus. We have been honored multiple years with the Outstanding House Corporation Award, and the undergraduates have been named a Petersen Significant Chapter several times. Brothers, to continue our legacy of success, we need your support! We have two specific asks: First, we need more of you to commit your time to the Chapter by serving on the House Corporation or Alumni Advisory Board. Starting in the 80's, Rick Siedlaczek '78, Terry McInerney '83, Jack Edman '50, Wally Grant '49, Don Lindow '70, Dick Swaney '69, and Jeff Palisin '86 served in leadership roles on House Corp and had powerful impacts on our Chapter. We have successfully navigated many challenges and proudly promote Theta Theta as an opportunity for young men to benefit from our fraternity's teachings and programs and join a brotherhood that provides lifelong friendships. To find out more about how our meetings work and how you can contribute, submit an inquiry at thetatheta.com or contact Jerry directly at jkocis398@gmail.com. Second, we need to pay off our current mortgage balance. A remnant of our large house renovation balance remains—around $112,000. Eliminating the mortgage payment and interest would allow us a sinking fund for house projects as needed. You can contribute via the enclosed form or you can give online at thetatheta.com. Another great way to support is to reach out to your pledge brothers and classmates to personally ask them to join the effort. On behalf of the House Corporation, we thank our alumni for your support and your brotherhood! Thank you, Dave, for years of great service, and thank you, Jerry, for stepping up to lead our board. Looking forward to seeing many of you in the fall! In Hoc, Dan Page '87 dpage345@gmail.com Dave Train '84 has passed the torch to Jerry Kocis '94. We're confident Jerry will be a great fit for his new role!
