ENSURING OUR LEGACY
A Shifting Higher Education Landscape
Over the last 15 years, higher education in the U.S. has
experienced notable shifts marked by steep increases in college
expenses and the widespread adoption of online learning
platforms. Perhaps one of the most consequential changes is the
16% decrease in male enrollment in undergraduate programs. In
essence, fewer men are pursuing advanced education than in any
comparable period in recent history.
This issue is also pressing at Valpo, and the university began a five-
year operational review in 2021. The process included employee
interviews, campuswide surveys, and an analysis of enrollment
data. The university said it needs to adapt in the face of declining
enrollment and a shrinking pool of traditional college-aged students.
Despite these challenges, involvement in Greek life has remained
above 20%, and as of spring 2024, 27% of Valpo students are Greek.
Now more than ever, fraternities like SigEp play a crucial role in
establishing lifelong connections for young men. Studies indicate
that fraternities cultivate stronger bonds among their members
and the university, offering a sense of satisfaction and connection
that non-members do not often experience. This enduring
connection extends well beyond graduation, enriching both the
campus community and personal relationships.
Indiana Zeta has concisely done great work in upholding the
values of SigEp through their on-campus work. With a dedicated
AVC, Indiana Zeta members have risen to the occasion time and
time again, both in and out of the classroom, by illustrating what
to means to truly be a SigEp.
The time is now to reward the dedicated on-campus brothers and
alumni with a home that feels like a house.
