uring his first semester at Drake, Mark Witke '82 met others with
whom he connected, and they encouraged him to join Theta Chi.
Mark enjoyed getting to know the members of Gamma Tau and formed
many friendships within his large freshman class.
Mark enjoyed being a part of a group. He and his brothers shared great
moments, including one Sweetheart Sing when his brothers dressed as
full-sized foam bananas. "It was a big hit. Everyone was laughing then
and continues laughing to this day when we recall that evening." Mark's
class also created the infamous "Waterfall" that came off the house roof.
As a member of Gamma Tau, Mark learned from his brothers and was a
part of the leadership team that strove to improve the chapter and help
others. Being a part of the fraternity taught him about the formation of
friendships and partnerships.
"When you live with over 50 people, you learn that you may not always
see eye to eye, but there is always a middle ground or a path to solve a
problem," he said. "Quite often, you need to accept a decision and move
forward. As I've gone through life, these foundational skills and
experiences were built as I formed new partnerships and worked with
others in a professional environment."
As Theta Chi was a large part of his education at Drake, Mark has
continued to support the chapter over the years. When he learned about
the Secure the Future capital campaign, he wanted to lend a helping hand.
"I think it is important to give, and I would encourage others to give to
help support the ever-changing needs of Gamma Tau," Mark said.
In his career, Mark is a part of a cheese manufacturing business where he
continues to learn every day. He shares that running a food manufacturing
plant during the pandemic was challenging. "It was encouraging to see
how everyone worked together to keep each other safe while putting forth
great effort to get the product to our customers."
Mark's son and daughter work with him. "It is fantastic to be able to share
with them every day."
In his free time, Mark enjoys playing tennis, biking, curling, traveling, and
singing in a choir. You can connect with him at markwitke@hotmail.com.
