THE BEARCAT SIG Zeta Psi Chapter of Sigma Chi at the University of Cincinnati V Summer 2024 Most of you instantly recognize this as the opening line of "A Message to Garcia" by Elbert Hubbard, 1899. For those not familiar, it is an essay that was part of initiation until around 2012. In summary, it is about a young lieutenant, Andrew Summers Rowan, who accepted an arduous task to carry a message to General Garcia. Lt. Rowan completed this task to the best of his ability with focus and dedication—and he did so without any hesitation or complaint. He successfully "carried a message to Garcia." The lesson to be learned is to accept and complete every task to the best of your ability without complaint or hesitation. Note that the original booklet from which the "Message to Garcia" was read is kept in the Zeta Psi Museum at the chapter house. Consider this: our undergraduates were without a chapter house for a year. Despite that difficulty, the chapter remained strong and still pledged and initiated over 30 brothers! Our executive officers, recruitment chairmen, and the entire active chapter truly "carried a message to Garcia." During the design and construction phases, our House Corporation leadership and the building committee spent countless hours in meetings, conference calls, site visits, and problem-solving. The result was a finished product that was well-executed and completed on time! And with only approximately 2% cost over budget! A truly amazing feat for a renovation project of a 50-year-old structure. Our House Corporation officers and our building committee members fiercely "carried a message to Garcia." No project, no matter how well designed or planned, can succeed without funding. In fact, this is probably the hardest part of the project. But the fundraising committee stayed focused on their task, and the result was a well-communicated message and successful fundraiser. Truly a group of dedicated brothers that "carried a message to Garcia." And a special recognition to all our Zeta Psi brothers who supported the project with their gifts. None of this would have happened without your support! Thank you all for "carrying a message to Garcia." Finally, the success of everyone's efforts is evidenced in the current strength of our on-campus chapter. Please take the time to read through the following narratives and testimonials from the undergraduates. They are the measure of our success. They are the next generation that will "Carry a Message to Garcia." Raise over $50,000 toward Huntsman Cancer Institute. Use the new chapter house for earlier summer recruitment and assemble a strong fall pledge class. Continue to create new systems to best utilize and manage the new chapter house. Chapter Goals
