alpha chi omega | page 4 L ianne's father is Chinese and came to Missouri from Honolulu, Hawaii. At the time, many sororities had racial clauses. By the time she was a senior, only two sororities had welcomed Asian women. Lianne felt fortunate that Alpha Chi and several others kept inviting her back and was honored to join Alpha Chi. Her sorority experience helped build self-confidence and gave Lianne opportunities that helped her grow a sense of competence in life. As an undergraduate, she has fond memories of recruitment, socials and formals. As an alumna, she has enjoyed visiting the house, going to football games and getting together with her close friends. She and a small group of sisters have taken a girls' trip every few years since the mid-'80s and have an instant bond every time! Alpha Chi also introduced Lianne to volunteering through experiences like manning the phone lines for the Jerry Lewis Marathon and organizing a fundraiser for United Way when she was co-chairman of the Greek Week Queen selection committee. "I still feel that donating time and effort to help others is an important part of life." Lianne's community involvement has included serving as secretary and twice as vice president of the Jefferson City Art Club. She serves as the cultural development chairman and the second vice president of DKG, an honor education sorority, is a new board member of the Jefferson City Cultural Arts Foundation, which provides fundraising for community-based art, and works with the Habitat for Humanity's family selection committee. In her career, Lianne taught elementary art in Missouri for 31 years. "I have a big thank you to Shirley Griffith Miller '73 for giving a recommendation for my placement in the Independence, Missouri, School District's fledgling elementary art program in 1979!" Lianne's main school was Sycamore Hills Elementary. She served as a mentor for new art educators and was on district writing teams for curriculum planning, state standards and middle school facility planning as well as art department professional development committees. She served as a district representative for a Getty Institute seminar at KU and participated in a collaborative graduate seminar with the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art and the Saint Louis Art Museum. In addition, she sponsored an after-school art club and served on Arts Partners advisory board for the metro Kansas City area. Lianne's proudest achievements include being recognized as Teacher of the Year and Who's Who in American Education. "I have former students who still keep in touch and appreciate having a wonderful school, co-workers and pupils who made going to work so much fun," she shared. Lianne has two sons who each married in Colorado in 2022. From her second marriage, she has two daughters, a son, wonderful granddaughters, two grandsons and two great- grands. In her free time, she enjoys reading, cooking, traveling, recreational shopping, going to estate sales, antiquing with friends, visiting art museums, taking art classes, sourdough baking and furniture refinishing. Three years ago, Lianne posted her hand-painted Chinoiserie-style pumpkins on Facebook, which led to a local boutique owner selling them in her monthly pop-up shop (Le Bee Marche) and store (Southbank Gift Company), an opportunity for which she is appreciative. Lianne also always looks forward to get-togethers with the Mid- Missouri Alpha Chi alumnae group. You can connect with her at lkh929@icloud.com.
