O n Monday, October 30, eta Chi held another well-attended Career Night. Alumni and actives met to discuss career paths, how to achieve career goals, and what to expect beyond the Hill and the walls of 85 Salisbury Street. Alumni Al Belniak '97, Dave Wildgoose '95, John Swanson '94, and Shawn Ayube '99, along with Chapter Advisor Bill Lucas '98, have put together a comprehensive career development plan for the Chapter, which kicked off with assisting with the fall WPI Career Fair. is latest event, attended by 10 alumni, also represented a broad spectrum of majors, degrees, disciplines, and corporate levels. All told, the panel featured more than 180 years of collective professional employment experience. e active Brotherhood helped to develop the content of the event by working with Al and Dave to define key needs (interns, career prep, resumes, etc.) and competencies of the group (majors, career paths, skills) so that the dialogue was engaging and impactful. e feedback from the Career Fair primer and last year's networking event was also incorporated into the agenda through an online survey. Al has been instrumental in the process through his engagement with the active Brotherhood and alumni network and has been leading the success of the program. e evening started in "traditional career night fashion" with dinner featuring alumni introductions, what they do now, and how they got there. is was an important element, as it became clear that not everyone leaves WPI doing explicitly what their diploma and degree would otherwise indicate. e active Brotherhood proceeded to ask some great questions of the alumni, including how to respond to tough interview questions, creating and expanding a network, how to build a career and not just job titles, and more. Alumni answered with real-life experiences from the perspectives of having been there before as well as being hiring managers in their own rights. e active Brotherhood engagement was tremendous, as the dialogue required little to no prompting from the alumni. e panel event lasted about 90 minutes, and after, the panel stuck around to take both one-on-one and group questions from the actives, look over and critiquing resumes, and more. e team sent out a survey the next day and collected some feedback from the actives to help guide and inform future career night events. Feedback from the actives through the survey process was very positive. e Career Networking team is in the process of developing additional events in the C and D term of 2024. We are actively looking for additional engagement from alumni. Feel free to reach out to Dave Wildgoose (davewildgoose@ gmail.com) and/or Alan Belniak (alan.belniak@gmail.com) if you would be interested in helping or participating in future events and programs. Lastly, we would like to thank all our panelists for their support and time at the event. We were well-represented as an alumni organization, and we should all be proud of the accomplishments and devotion we have as a Brotherhood. Hilman 1914. Recently, we have been digitizing this collection to ensure its longevity. e first artifact in the collection is a copy of the Rattle from 1914, which is the first issue of the Rattle under the management of the Grand Chapter. is copy is in excellent condition and complete with all pages. e next artifact is a copy of Commencement Number of the Journal of the Worcester Polytechnic Institute from 1914, which is also pristine. Following is a subset of Brothers' portraits, each signed by the respective Brother. e subset includes portraits of Ray C. Crouch 1913, Edward C. Bartlett 1914, Harold L. Kane 1914, Clayton R. Wilcox 1914, Russell H. Smith 1917, Kenneth W. Crossman 1919, George R. Rich 1919, Paul M. Abbott 1920, and two additional Brothers who are yet to be identified. Lastly is a subset of Hilman's personal belongings. Within this subset is a history notebook, a physics notebook, a digital scan of a World War I draft card, and a project binder. In the project binder is Hilman's documentation of testing on what is presumably a water wheel. e binder seems to be missing pages; however, those still enclosed are in excellent condition. So far, the portraits and Hilman's project binder have been digitized. e remaining items will be scanned in the coming weeks for addition to the digital collection.
