Reverend Justin Herman shares that devotion to God as campus pastor of Purdue University, and he is grateful to continue developing a connection between Beta Chapter and University Lutheran. A FAITHFUL UPBRINGING Growing up in a small Michigan town, Reverend Herman spent most Sundays going to church with his grandparents. He often spoke with his grandfather about God's word, and his grandmother gifted him his first Bible. At a career crossroads, prayer guided Reverend Herman to become a pastor. A friend guided him to the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, and since then, Herman has served in ministries in Huntington Beach, California, and Power and Fairfield, Montana. "I learned that deep down, all people are pretty much the same. God's law and gospel speaks to all people no matter where he has placed them." CONNECTING WITH BETA As Reverend Herman pursued a Ph.D. in Fort Wayne, Reverend John Pless recommended him for campus ministry to the Indiana District Office. Following his studies, Reverend Herman found an opportunity to serve as a pastor once again when the district's board of directors voted him to become the new campus pastor at Purdue. "From day one, I've been thankful for the relationship that ULu and the Beta Sig House have shared." From setting up worship and hosting a ULu tent in the front lawn to even hosting worship in the Beta House for half a semester, the brotherhood has fully embraced its connection with the campus ministry. IMPACTING THE HOUSE Throughout Reverend Herman's time as a pastor at University Lutheran, weekly dinners and Bible studies with brothers at the Chapter House have remained a constant. Beta Chapter even invited Reverend Herman to become an honorary brother in recognition of their spiritual bonds. "It is great to share God's word with the guys and to be there for them whenever they need spiritual counsel," the Reverend added. By sharing the small catechism, Reverend Herman has seen several members devote themselves to Lutheranism over the past nine years, including some seeking confession and absolution. "One of the greatest things about the House is that they always ask me to bring God's word to them." Reverend Herman continues to see brothers exhibit forgiveness and conflict resolution within the Chapter House, and he is grateful for the opportunity to unite them through religion. You can connect with Reverend Herman at pastorherman@icloud.com. "The forgiveness of sins with one another is one of the things that we confess in the Apostles' Creed, and I have seen it time and time again in the house."
