Trusted to Share Stories The Life of Morning News Anchor/Reporter Tess Maune '04 T hough it's been 20 years since Tess Maune '04 pledged Chi Omega, she'll never forget the connection and certainty she felt when she first stepped foot in the Tau Beta house. "It felt like home." In the house and in the years since, Tess has felt like her sisters have helped set a standard she has wanted to maintain. "They are smart, strong, hard-working, compassionate, inspiring—every positive adjective you can come up with—and when you surround yourself with the good people of this world, you can only expect some of that good will also shine in you." Tess's fondest Tau Beta memories were the small things, whether it was catching up with a large group in one tiny room or receiving constant support. One of her favorite experiences was serving as a Homecoming director her junior year. She and several sisters and AGR brothers had long days, sleepless nights, and lots of fun together. "We came in second, but the memories and friendships that were built are more valuable than any first-place trophy ever could be," she said. While Tess had a lot of fun in college, Tau Beta held her accountable. "I'm certain the woman I am today is thanks to those I've met along the way through Chi Omega and the values that still hold strong within Tau Beta today." Tess has carried the Symphony with her too. As a news anchor/ reporter for KOTV-News On 6, she has many encouraging supporters but also faces negative people. When she's had a tough day, the line, "To be womanly always; to be discouraged never," gives her peace and reminds her, "Who I am, who I want to be, and who I represent." Tess has dreamed of being a morning news anchor/reporter since she was 10. "Of course, when I was 10, I didn't realize my dream job would require me to wake up every morning at 1:45. I've learned to adjust and wouldn't want it any other way." Tess feels privileged to be one of the first faces and voices to help people start their days. Her job is fun, exciting, fast-paced, and different every day, and she is honored that Oklahomans trust her with their stories—both the bad and the good. "It takes having a lot of faith in someone to put heartache, hope, joy, or questions for resolve into the hands of someone else. I consider it a great responsibility to tell those stories." In addition to being a morning anchor, Tess is also News On 6's wildlife reporter, where she highlights the positive impact and conservation efforts people are making in the outdoors. Tess met her husband of six years, Matt (an OSU alumnus), on a noodling trip. "I grabbed a catfish that day, but Matt was my best catch." He is a senior wildlife biologist for the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation. They have a Yorkipoo named Cookie. Matt introduced Tess to the outdoors, and when she's not reporting, she can be found hunting, scouting, fishing, or noodling. "It's been the joy of my life to learn and love the outdoors and to get to introduce that passion to others, especially women and girls, to let them know they can be part of the outdoor world too," she shared. I'll always be grateful for that time and for all the women who were there to laugh and cry and help me along the way. Thank you, Tau Beta, for everything you've given me over the years."
