Whether you are home or away, protect what matters most from unexpected power outages with a Generac Home Standby Generator. As an 11-year-old sixth grader at Cool Springs school my classmates and I received the news of President John F. Kennedy's assassination from our teacher Mrs. Katherine Conley. The sad news began with a knock on our door that Nov. 22, 1963 Friday afternoon 60 years ago. Mrs. Conley told us what had happened. The President had been shot in Dallas, Texas. It didn't seem as though much time passed when we heard over the intercom that the President had died. Since it was already afternoon, we remained at school until it was time to board the school bus for home. For those living that day, I'm certain if someone asked you where you were that November afternoon, I feel you would know exactly. It was one of those tragedies that are forever etched in our minds. It is for me, anyway. For those who weren't living in 1963, but alive when the Challenger exploded or the Twin Towers were attacked, you know what I mean. Two of my sisters weren't in school when President Kennedy was killed. When my younger sister and I got off the school bus at the top of our road we ran as fast as we could down the three- tenths of a mile stretch of road to deliver the news to our sisters. They met us on the road. They were in disbelief, too. They actually met us on the road. It never dawned on me they would have already heard about President Kennedy's death since the news was on the three major television networks —for the next four days. Our family was pretty much glued to the television until the following Monday night as we watched the happenings in Washington, DC and Dallas, Texas. Everything was broadcast live. I never left the one television set that was in our living room except to do whatever was absolutely necessary. We did go to church on Sunday, but as soon as we got home, we turned on television and witnessed Jack Ruby as he shot Lee Harvey Oswald as Oswald was being transferred to another jail. Right in front of our faces, we witnessed a murder that would leave so many unanswered questions six decades ago. I remember our mama almost screaming out loud that Oswald had been shot. From that day and for years, I clipped newspaper and magazine articles of the assassination and the days following. I still have the scrapbooks with the yellowish news clippings of those days in history. Many clippings are from The Grit paper, the only paper we received on a regular basis. Every publication in print at the time told the story over and over. I treasure those pieces of history in my personal library. I can still see Air Force One as it landed in Washington, D,C, late that Friday evening with President Kennedy's body, First Lady Jackie Kennedy, staff and others from the administration. My heart ached for her as she followed the casket from the airplane to an awaiting ambulance. I can see President Lyndon Johnson as he walked off Air Force One and faced the nation with his wife LadyBird beside him. He asked for the help of the nation, "and God's" help. It was raining on Saturday as dignitaries arrived at the White House to pay respects. Then on Sunday there was a ceremony in the Capitol Rotunda where the President's body would lie in state until Monday. I never forgot Sen. Majority Leader Mike Mansfi eld's words, "There was a sound of laughter, in a moment it was no more. And so she took a ring from her fi nger and placed it in his hand..." he said. I remember the young Kennedy children with Mrs. Kennedy. I also remember John Jr. being taken away from the ceremony because he couldn't be still. We watched Jackie Kennedy leave the Capitol and walk down those long steps holding the hands of her two young children at the conclusion of the ceremony. The funeral mass was on Monday at St. Matthew's Cathedral. The family and a host of world dignitaries walked with Mrs. Kennedy and family from the White House to the church for the funeral mass. As a child I remember wondering how she could walk in her high heels. An Aunt reminded me as we watched together, her feet were the least of her concerns. I was still worried. Taps sounded later at the burial site at Arlington National Cemetery. I am not sure why I can vividly recall those Four Days in history, but I do. I've been to the Kennedy gravesite in Arlington a couple times and I stood there, I would recall moment by moment the events of the burial ceremony. The fl y over, taps and the 21-gun salute and the folding of the American Flag. The nation was brought together during some of the darkest days in our country. Looking back, I suppose in today's terms, we'd say we were all on the same page. Our hearts ached together regardless of party affi liations as we had never witnessed such a tragedy as the death of a President. Six decades later, there are still unanswered questions about the events of November 1963, but it seemed to me as a vulnerable young child, we were a heartbroken nation under God. Recently National Geographic aired a 3-hour documentary on the assassination and events. Just like a long time ago, I watched every minute of the special. What a terrible weekend for our country and world, forever etched in my mind. They were the darkest of days for me and a young girl who loved President Kennedy. So where were you on November 22,1963?
