ALPHA AVALANCHE | TEXAS ALPHA | PHI KAPPA PSI | | FALL EDITION 2023 Jack Culpepper '84 Why did you choose Phi Kappa Psi? Phi Psi was at the top of my list because my father and other family members were Texas Alphans. The final decision came down to a feeling of comfort and ease with the group; our guys are real and genuine. How has Texas Alpha shaped who you are today? As a kid from a small town, I was very naïve; my brothers helped me see a larger picture of the world. Staying in touch with some of them to this day has been a blessing and support for me throughout my life. What are some of your favorite Phi Psi memories? As an undergraduate, we took a chapter retreat to a ranch where our family hunted in Del Rio, Texas. We rented a UT bus and driver, and it was an adventure just making it down all those bad backroads in a bus! We ate, drank and played some serious paintball with a former Navy Seal as a coach. Another memory I cherish is the time our national leadership team pitched a new Phi Psi colony at Texas A&M University. Why do you continue to donate to Phi Psi? Giving back to Texas Alpha is rewarding and reinforces those memories of friends and college. Remembering the days of tight budgets and being able to help a little now puts a smile on my face. Do you stay in touch with brothers from your era? Our pledge class had our 40th reunion in September in Austin. We had Zoom calls during COVID-19 and some of us have gone on hiking trips together, but I was excited to see so many face-to-face again. What career did you pursue after college? We have a small family business and have survived and grown since 1937. My son, John, is working with us as a fourth-generation employee. My hope is to see us hit 2037 and be a 100-year-old family business! How are you spending your time these days? My wife, Mary, and I have three children and became grandparents this past June. As parents of a severely disabled child, we don't sweat the small stuff. With a strong foundation in God, our children have turned into wonderful adults, and we are very proud of each of them. Any last words to share with fellow Texas Alphans? If any brothers are in the Bryan College Station area, come see us at Culpepper Realty Co.
