Box 4625, Quartzsite, AZ 85359 By Joanne Winer Despite the threat of rain, hundreds of people came out to enjoy the 7th Annual "It's Chili in Quartzsite" Chili Cookoff last Saturday at Tyson Wells Showgrounds. The festivities started with the cooks meeting at 10am and then the cooking started with the contests for C.A.S.I. com- petitions in chili and salsa cham- pionships where the cooks were trying to get points to qualify to go on to the national competitions in Terlingua, Texas. There were also many cooks regis- tered to compete in the local "Peo- ple's Choice Chili" cookoff spon- sored by the Quartzsite Business Chamber of Commerce, and there were 11 entries for the big prizes. The C.A.S.I. competitions were judged by blind tasting, with all en- tries given a numbered cup to hand in to the judges, who then tasted all the entries and picked the ones they thought were the best in both the chili and salsa contests. The "People's Choice" competi- tions were judged by the public, with cup sales starting at noon, where voting tickets were given out with each cup and the people went to each booth and tasted the peo- ple's choice chili, then picked the one they like the best and put their vote into the cups provided. The votes were then counted at the end of the competition and the highest three were given the prize money.
