This popular event will be bringing in cooks from all over the state to compete for the chance to get enough points to go on to the national cookoff held in Terlingua, Texas. The cookoff is being sponsored by the Quartzsite Business Chamber of Com- merce in cooperation with the Chili Ap- preciation Society International (CASI) organization and will also include the State Salsa Competition. In the C.A.S.I. competition, entrants must prepare and cook their chili on site, and there can be no fi llers added to the chili. The cooks will start cooking at 10am. Judging will be in the afternoon by blind tasting. The top ten winners will be announced after all the votes have been tallied. The State Salsa Championship will have three top winners who will also get points to go on to Nationals. For this com- petition, you may prep your veggies ahead of time and put in together on site. As well as the C.A.S.I. competitions, there will also be a locally sponsored Peo- ple's Choice chili cookoff, with cash prizes donated by local businesses. The top win- ner will receive $1000, 2 nd place getting $500, and third place $250. Entrants in this competition can add fi llers to their chili, and must make at least 5 gallons of chili so there will be enough to be tasted by the public who will pick the winners by placing their voting tickets at their choice. "I'm so glad they took those precautions", said Town Manager, Alex Taft, "as it kept people safe". Some people did not head the warnings, as Quartzsite Police were called to rescue stranded motorists in Tyson Wash during the night. The wash was running so strong, rescuers resorted to "bucket lift" the oc- cupants to safely. During the night, RVs moved to higher ground at Rice Ranch as the parking lot turned into a lake again, overfl owing banks, fl ooding vendors and the area behind Gamblers. Strong winds uprooted many saguaros around town and destroyed many ven- dor's tents. Hard hit was Tyson Wells and Desert Gardens. The next day brought out residents and visitors to view the damage, and more calls to the Police with "stupid motorist laws" being broken. Western Swing QUARTZSITE- On Thursday evening, January 21, 2010, a long time resident of Quartzsite, AZ died violently. The stately, elderly, 12 foot Sagua- ro was weakened during the recent pro- longed rains and couldn't resist when struck by high winds which had also attacked others of the Saguaro family in the neighborhood. Saguaro toppled onto North Washington Avenue par- tially blocking the street which sealed its fate. Members of the Town of Quartz- site road crew and Police were called to the scene. The fi nal moments came as a backhoe pushed and lifted the prostrate body from the street placing it back onto its long-time bed. The remains will lie in state until Nature takes its natural course. Saguaro will be greatly missed by all. Nancy Cook, mourner, Quartzsite Editor's note: an unusually large amount of Saguaros were lost during the storm and many residents called to share their sadness.
