thejewelrybook.com | 17 How did you curate such a talented and fabulous group of jewelry designers? Much like a great retailer, I follow my instincts when it comes to curating talent and adding to the For Future Reference roster. Because this is a business built on relationships, I try to align with people who are serious about work but also fun to be around. We travel together, we have late night text threads, emergency meetings — there has to be a huge level of trust. But what's wonderful about FFR is that the designers can have their own relationships as well, learning from each other and off ering help where needed. Most importantly, I really look for designers whose brands are a direct refl ection of them. e more organic and seamless the story is, the better response the jewelry will have. Who was your mentor? I have had a lot of mentors along the way, but one person who I've really traveled on my jewelry journey with is Victoria Gomelsky, the editor of JCK magazine and New York Times contributor. We started out together at National Jeweler more than 20 years ago and have traveled all over the world exploring this business, from Tanzania to Vicenza to Basel. e stories are endless. Fun fact people may not know about you? I was the captain of my high school tennis team. For some reason people have a hard time envisioning me playing sports or exercising, but I swear, I do! What's the best advice that you received for business? Mr. Rogers said it best! " ere are three ways to ultimate success: e fi rst way is to be kind. e second way is to be kind. e third way is to be kind."
