When did you decide to concentrate on jewelry? You seem to have taken a unique approach that is very successful. I've been an accessory lover since my earliest days, and I studied journalism in college because I wanted to move to NYC to write about fashion. On a whim I went on an interview for the role of Fashion Editor at National Jeweler magazine. I was shocked when I got the gig, but I couldn't have been luckier. Fine jewelry quickly became a passion and I found myself thrown immediately into the fi re — attending trade shows, traveling to gemstone mines, and meeting the industry's most well-known designers. It was a dream job and led me to the career I have now. Your style is impeccable and really sets the tone for your company. How would you describe your signature style. Advice on how to style jewelry? As I've gotten older, I've defi nitely settled into my style which I think is a little bit bohemian, a little bit disco, and a lot of maximalism. My jewelry tends toward the bold and leans heavily on yellow gold, juicy gemstones and supersized scale. I like statement pieces that turn heads and have curated a collection that includes both the incredible contemporary designers that I represent and the vintage and estate pieces that make my heart sing. I style jewelry the same way I style my outfi ts or my house — I like to mix textures, colors and patterns to create unexpected combinations. I'm defi nitely not a matchy-matchy kind of gal. What advice would you give to designers? e jewelry business is highly saturated and requires a lot of investment, so my fi rst question to potential clients is always: are you in this for the long haul? Building a clientele and a signature style takes time, patience and money. But if you are coming to it with a fresh eye, attention to detail and emphasis on quality, you have a shot. From there it's really about honing a niche that isn't already available in the market. Randi Molofsky, founder of For Future Reference, is also the author of "A Girl's Guide to Buying Diamonds" and a noted editor, curator and executive in the ne jewelry and gemstone industries. Our "Getting to Know" feature is one of my favorites as it gives me an opportunity to chat with someone I have admired from afar … and it is also a way to introduce you to someone I think you would want to know. —Nicole From left, Mark Davidovich, Director of Wholesale for For Future Reference with FFR designer Jade Ruzzo and Randi at her Bergdorf Goodman trunk show.
