The WISE OLD OWL Epsilon Kappa ChaptEr of sigma Chi fratErnity at thE UnivErsity of mEmphis Fall 2023 FEATURES: Leaders in Memphis - 2 • A Lasting Bond - 3 • Save the Date - 4 G reetings from the House Corporation! I hope all of you are doing well. I am happy to share that we have been enjoying an eventful and successful 2023. I am pleased to announce that we recently received the Outstanding House Corporation Award from International Headquarters yet again! The award "recognizes the fraternity's House Corporation that has best served its undergraduate Chapter in the previous year while adhering to best management practices." We have won this award every year since 2018 and intend to maintain this level of excellence going forward. A special thanks is owed to House Corporation Vice President Don Wilson '68 for submitting the application on our behalf every year. In serving as the undergraduate Chapter's landlord, the House Corporation continues to work with the Chapter in making repairs and performing maintenance to the house. Construction on the house was completed in August 2004, and some of the original equipment has started to fail. We have performed repairs to the HVAC system and had to replace several components. In addition, we replaced some of the appliances and addressed leaks to keep our home functional and in shape. Bunky Wingfield '68 has served as the House Corporation's liaison with the Chapter and our contractor and has done a great job. Lastly, I wanted to invite you to a social event at the Chapter House, located at 3582 Mynders Avenue, on Friday, November 3. The event will start at 6 p.m. and will be catered by our friends and brothers at Corky's. Wine and beer will be provided to those over 21, and non- alcoholic drinks will also be available. This will take place the night before the University of Memphis Homecoming football game and will be co-hosted with the Alumni Association. Please plan to attend and invite your fellow alumni. Significant others are welcome as well. We hope to see you there! Keeping our house the best on campus sure makes me proud to be a Sigma Chi! What a great year we have had, and we look forward to finishing out 2023 with a big BANG! We have plenty in store for the rest of the year and would like to share a recap of our spring and summer. Firstly, what an amazing Founder's Day. A group of roughly 20 members gathered at the Epsilon Kappa Chapter House for Ritual in mid-June. Together, we fellowshipped and brought everything back to the true meaning of Sigma Chi: our Ritual. Brother Bunky Wingfield '68 led the charge at the end of the meeting, and we continued at Tracks Sports Pub. If you have not been to our Ritual in a while, try and make it next year. Same time and place. Our second event of the summer was, as always, the Alumni Spring River Trip. Many guys came together at the Spring River Oaks campground and floated the river on Saturday. Many tales were told, beers had, and new friendships forged. Special thanks to Paul Bell '92 for always organizing a great trip and to Tom Cassidy '93 for cooking. With fall here, one important southern tradition is back—football season! Whether you're rooting for our local Memphis Tigers, the Ole Miss Rebels, the Tennessee Volunteers, or any other chapter represented in our alumni group, we hope everyone has a great and safe time this season. We hope everyone can come out to the EK house on Friday, November 3, for our annual Homecoming dinner and celebration. Let's all have a good time! Lastly, I want to draw everyone's attention to a very important matter. From an alumni Chapter standpoint, we are sitting very well. We have plenty of members and plenty of money, and we are actually chartered. However, for several years now, we have asked anyone who wants to be involved on the Alumni Board to please reach out. Well, now the time has come to not just ask but rather push for a few good men stand up and take the call. Several of our board members, me included, have been involved at the board level going on seven years. Slowly, we have been rolling off and new members have come on. In the new year, we will have four open seats on the board. The time to act is now. The time to become involved is now. Without new board members, I do not know where and what the future of our association will be. Please reach out to any of us if you are interested. Looking forward to a great fall and seeing everyone in November! In Hoc, Thomas K. Ratliff Jr., MidSouth Alumni Chapter President Alumni gather to celebrate Founder's Day.
