Email: cwf10@columbia.edu Alum ni Update Turning the Page for His Next Adventure Q&A with Exiting Chapter President Christopher Guttman '23 Why did you choose to join Delta Kappa Epsilon? I was looking to get out of my social comfort zone and become friends with more than just the guys on the football team. During my freshman year, I did just that and created bonds with a bunch of young men I otherwise wouldn't have met. The driving motivation for us when reviving the chapter was the desire to give future classes that same opportunity to expand their horizons. Why did you decide to serve as a chapter officer? It was a natural move—I had led the efforts to gain reinstatement, but I was also passionate about the effort to revive the chapter and had a vision for how a thriving DKE might look. What did you hope to accomplish as president? My main goal was to enable the chapter to smoothly transition into a fully self-reliant entity. This meant putting three separate classes through an education process to go from 16 to 66 members in a single semester. Another major priority was for the chapter to be seen positively by the rest of the school. This included doing 50/50 raffles for charity and making sure all members acted in a proper manner. What aspects of the chapter and your officer group were you most proud of? I'm proud of the younger members for buying into the culture and trusting us to make their fraternity experience the best it could be. I want to shoutout my 15 classmates who were integral to the revival of the chapter and thank the Gamma Phi alumni who were immensely helpful throughout the process! Why is it important for members to serve in leadership roles and take those posts seriously? All organizations and teams need solid leadership to help navigate the chaos, and that's especially true in fraternities. It's crucial to have responsible leaders that ensure the chapter is headed in the right direction. Taking those roles seriously shows respect for the decades of hard work that came before in establishing the foundation of the chapter and its core values. How did Gamma Phi help make you the person you are today? It helped me break out of my shell as a freshman, and I haven't looked back since. It also allowed me to hone my leadership skills, which I'm positive will be extremely valuable as I transition into the "real world." What is next for you? I will be staying at Wesleyan and pursuing a graduate degree!
