The Deke Newsletter GAMMA PHI CHAPTER AT WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY | FALL 2023 T he new academic year has begun, and the fine group of young lions representing DKE are back on campus. This newsletter will focus on this dedicated group of Gamma Phi undergraduate brothers, including a profile on outgoing Brother Beta (President) Chris Guttman '23. We also have an outstanding new faculty advisor, Dan Dicenzo, who you may recognize as Wesleyan's head football coach. We are elated that our undergraduates will once again attend the Homecoming festivities at the chapter house! To celebrate this, Kent Literary Club will host the official reception there on October 28 from 4 to 7 p.m. We will have libations (for those of age), music, and food from Sicily's on Main Street. Please plan on attending to show the alumni support and recognition that these brothers have earned through their hard work and commitment to Gamma Phi. We take this good Homecoming news as a positive sign from the administration. Aside from this event, however, the current Wesleyan policy forbidding access to the property under severe penalty is still in force. The renovation plans that have been complete for almost five years are dependent on a revenue stream from chapter house occupancy. Unless that policy changes, we are in a holding pattern. We have the funds to continue to pay the mandatory costs, including property taxes, insurance, and the security system. We are also performing basic maintenance projects to ensure the stability and integrity of the structure itself. Lastly, given his ties to several board members (and many more Dekes), we want to note the passing of Steve Beauchamp '77 this summer. Many can remember the chapter house revitalization project about 10 years ago: Steve painted the ceiling of the living room while entertaining us with his soaring operatic repertoire—putting his acting and singing professions to great use! Steve was a true renaissance man and will be sorely missed. In the Bonds, Gary D.
