Alumni News John Stewart III '58 resides in Lawrence. John was recognized by KU Endowment for being the university's longest consecutive donor at 73 years and counting. John held many positions at KU Endowment and has served on numerous boards. John and his wife, Linda, have supported many funds across KU, including Danforth Chapel, which holds special family significance. The Stewart family's four children are KU alumni, as are nearly 80 extended family members. Ron and Sandra spend time gardening, singing in their church choir, and keeping track of their three grandchildren. Their oldest granddaughter, Cassie, is studying at the University of Pennsylvania, while Cathlene received a Wells Scholarship at IU. Chad launched Tenpenny Law LLC in 2022, focusing on lobbying, government relations, and general counsel in Washington, D.C., and Kansas. He is also a clinical professor in the same fields at the University of Washington School of Medicine, and Timothy is the deputy director of the Veterans Health Administration's National Pain Medicine Program Office. Stephen has enjoyed the challenge of transitioning from Raytheon to a small business conglomerate. His first project is rebuilding and scaling Annabelle's, a fine furniture and interior design business. Stephen hopes to get into windsurfing. Email: neilphillips14@gmail.com Memory and Our Mystic Shrine Jack Atherton '51 entered the Mystic Shrine on February 19, 2023. Jack earned a law degree in 1953, going on to practice in Hutchinson, Kan., before returning to Emporia. He would practice law until retirement in 2000. Jack was also a World War II and Korean War veteran. Jack was passionate about horses, farming, woodworking, hunting, and his family. He was also a member of the First Congregational Church. Jack and his wife, Anne, married in August 1960. They have four children and five grandchildren. Wally Altman '53 entered the Mystic Shrine on December 30, 2022. Wally played basketball during his freshman year of college prior to Army service in the 101st Airborne Division during the Korean War. After graduation, he began a successful career in banking. Wally worked his way up to president of the Sedgwick County Bankers Association, and he was a member of the Governing Council and Board of Directors of the Kansas Bankers Association. Wally and his wife, Nella, have two children, five grandchildren, and 12 great- grandchildren. During his later years, one of Wally's great joys was frequent updates on his great-grandchildren. Loren Crown, M.D. '67 entered the Mystic Shrine on May 29, 2022. Attending the university with an athletic scholarship after numerous honors as a runner, Loren would go on to become a Doctor of Medicine. Loren became a clinical professor while on the University of Tennessee's Health Sciences Center faculty, training many in family and emergency medicine. Lecturing throughout the U.S., publishing journals, and event moderating a medical television program, Loren did whatever he could to spread his expertise for the sake of others. After retiring, Loren and his wife, Elaine, enjoyed traveling and spending time with their 10 grandchildren. Michael Hagan, M.D. '06 entered the Mystic Shrine on August 17, 2023. Michael earned a medical degree in 2010 from the university's medical school, later joining Consultants of Gastroenterology in Kansas City, Mo. During college, Michael met his wife, Tami. Michael was passionate about his family life and their three daughters, often sharing with them his love for collegiate basketball and golf.
