September 20, 2023 www.DesertMessenger.com 29 It is fair to say that if you lived or visited Quartzsite, Chuck made your time in Quartzsite better, whether you knew him or not. For so many improvements in Quartzsite, Chuck was involved: the Town Park, the road improvements, particularly Main Street, the first Quartzsite Fire Board, the Quartzsite Cham- ber of Commerce, Search and Rescue, Quartzsite Veterans Association, and the first Town Council. Born Charles Wayne Busby, November 26, 1933 in Eclato, Texas, Chuck enlisted in the Coast Guard as a young man. After 27 years of service, earning numerous service medals and awards including the Coast Guard Achievement Medal, he retired as a Commander. For most people that would be a very com- plete and accomplished life, but Chuck had more to do. He went to college. He became a certified instructor for Arizona Western College in Quartzsite. He and his wife Myrna had their own business, "Anchor B" and while he was at it, Chuck became involved in so many projects that helped this Town to grow and to be a better place to live. Chuck never did retire. He found a new job, and it was helping Quartzsite be a better place to live and visit. With his close friend Jack Burris, they were always coming up with new ideas. For many years he was involved in many important development projects for Quartzsite. As his health began to fade and Chuck's stamina diminished, his wife Myrna drove him to a lot of the ADOT meetings around the state that Chuck felt were really important. His presence and contributions to ADOT meetings gave Quartzsite a front and center presence for priority road projects that would otherwise not have occurred. In Memorium Mayor "Chuck" Busby Charles "Chuck" Wayne Busby 1933 - 2008 Memorial to be held on Sat., Nov. 22 Chuck is preceded in death by his daughter Suni Foshee and step- daughter Valerie L. Henneman, his father Charles E. Busby, his mother Lola Mae Busby, his brother James Busby and sister Jane Linder. He is survived by his wife Myrna, his son Gary Busby, his daughter Vicki Wil- son, step-daughter Diana Henrichs, his brother Thomas Busby, his sister Nancy Busby, 7 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Chuck Busby recently received his 12 years of service award from the Ari- zona League of Cities and Towns. Most recently, he was appointed as Mayor for the Town of Quartzsite, after serving several years as Vice-Mayor. Chuck passed away on Election Day, November 4, 2008 after a long illness. Everyone became accustomed to Chuck not feeling well and working anyway. His wife Myrna made that possible, by always helping him to help Quartzsite. Chuck's passing came as a shock to many because he was always there, no matter how he felt. As a retired Commander of the United States Coast Guard, Chuck knew how to do things right. He didn't believe in getting inferior products to save money. He told the Park Board that fact often. "If you're going to do it, do it right". He certainly did. Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, November 22, 2008 at 11:00am at the Quartzsite Senior Center 40 S. Moon Mountain Road in Quartzsite. They accompanied the couple back to their home where they started doing the repairs. The men then asked if they could use the restroom. They were allowed to use the restroom at the residence, and then told the couple they needed to get some parts to finish the job and left, and never returned. The elderly couple then discovered that $2,000 in cash had been stolen from their residence. Anyone is susceptible to scams, especially the elderly. The Booster Club sponsored this event, raising money for their Christmas Programs. The crowd enjoyed cheering on both teams. The Police Dept. Team had 8 penal- ties, with only 6 penalties for the Fire Dept. Team. It was a very fast paced game, with many entertaining mo- ments. At one point it looked like a football game with an officer landing on the ball as the crowd roared with laughter! It was a great event and the Booster Club was surprised and pleased to see the support of the community. Besides a small snack bar, the Boost- er Club had a fifty-fifty raffle. "It's great to see our police and fire departments having this much fun!" said one attendee.
