26 www.DesertMessenger.com September 20, 2023 "Pay It Forward" Editorial by "Rain" Shanana Golden-Bear As you know by now, I am the new publisher/owner of the Desert Messenger. Walt Akin has "passed the torch" to me! To clarify, Walt Akin gave me this business and this incredible opportunity. Walt has built a great foundation for this paper and I plan on building on that. This was not exactly what I had in mind when we had lunch together back in the spring. After 4 seasons of being a waitress at La Casa Del Rancho in Quartzsite, "serving the people", my body told me to pay attention to it and do something different. I sent out a prayer asking, "How can I still be of service to the people of Quartzsite?" Evidently, Walt had put out his intention of fi nding someone to take over the paper. And here we are today! In the Indian world, the richest person is not the one who has the most "stuff ". It is the one who gives away the most. Walt Akin is to be honored for his generosity and his "give away". During the summer I saw the movie, "Pay it Forward", a wonderful story about a young boy who truly believes he can make a difference in the world by helping someone, then that person "pays it forward" by helping someone else, and on and on. It's a powerful movie with a heartfelt message. "Paying it Forward" in the Indian world is through our Give Away Ceremony and our way of life. In honor of Walt's gift, I have gifted my vending business to a Sun Dance brother and his family. I tell this only to chal- lenge you to "Pay it Forward" in your own life! When every citizen of Quartzsite begins "Paying it Forward" on a regular basis and doing their give aways, imagine the how much the town will be blessed and full of prosperity! As you can tell, I'm a positive thinker and I like to have fun! Yeah, there's nega- tive stuff in the world, however, I know deep in my bones that the more we focus in on the positive, the more positive we will have in our lives. It's just the way it is. Whatever you focus on you will attract more of that to you! So what do you want in your life? I say, "Pilamaye" (Lakota for thank you) to Walt Akin! - "Rain" When addressing the question of recognition of the Chamber, Miller replies, "The Quartzsite Chamber of Commerce is recognized by the Ari- zona Offi ce of Tourism as the offi cially designated Local Visitor Information Center. "To make this perfectly clear, the Quartzsite Chamber of Commerce has not lost its designation as an Arizona Of- fi ce of Tourism LVIC. You are a valued community partner and we look forward to working with you to continue bringing visitors to the Quartzsite area." Angelina Masales, Executive Direc- tor of the Quartzsite Chamber of Com- merce, said in a phone interview, Friday, September 26, 2008, "Quartzsite Cham- ber of Commerce has been an Arizona Local Visitor of Information Center since 1992. We had to be re-designated for the location of our building because the building must meet ADA approval. We must have water for our visitors and residents, must have a telephone for their use and must have ADA approved restroom facilities. We've never lost the state's recognition." Chamber from Pg. 1 According to law, all American tele- vision stations must switch their broadcasting from analog to digital by February 17, 2009. Television sets connected to cable or satellite are not affected but analog television sets not connected to cable, satellite or a telephone company service provider will not receive any television signal after that date. There are several ways to switch by February 17, 2009: 1) purchase a DTV converter box (Federal government provides $40 coupons towards its purchase); 2) purchase a new television set with a built-in digital tuner; or 3) subscribe to cable, satellite or a telephone company service to continue to use your analog TV set (if desired local broadcast stations are carried by that service). The National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) will issue coupons for converter boxes and each household is eligible for up to two valued at $40 and the coupons need to be redeemed within3 months of receipt. Poker Run for Food Bank This was my first editorial for Quartzsite. It was an incredible summer preparing to publish the Desert Messenger. For weeks, I hunkered down in a cabin with very little cell service, learning new software, taking journalism tests, and studying, and studying. The first edition was all black and white as Walt had done, but that changed for all future editions. There is an under current sweeping across America like a bad flu virus, challenging our core be- liefs. The economy and beliefs go hand in hand. Consumer purchases gener- ate 70% of economic activity. When we have faith the economy goes up, when we have fear the economy goes down. It all boils down to the eye of our col- lective perception. Our perception is a If we look at the history of our fore- fathers, we see they built the founda- tion of America, on the power of faith. Washington said at the First Inaugu- ral Address, "No people can be bound to acknowledge and adore the Invis- ible Hand which conducts the affairs of men more than those of the United States." Roosevelt said, " There is nothing to Fear but fear itself." Nelson Mandela quoted from Marianne Williamson's in his speech: "Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure." Attend the Town Council October 15, 2008 October 1, 2008
