This fear came to reality on Tuesday, Sept. 2, when one of our customers came down into the bookstore and told Paul that they noticed smoke coming from the trailer behind the store that was used as an Quick action by Fire Dept. saves book store By Joanne Winer By Shanana "Rain" Golden-Bear To clarify questions raised by a recent article published in a local newspaper, An- gelina "Angie" Masales, Executive Director of the Quartzsite Chamber of Commerce & Local Visitor Information Center, appeared before the Quartzsite Town Council on Tues. Sept. 23. Masales read a letter from Tina Lynn Miller, Director of Communications of the Arizona Offi ce of Tourism located in Phoenix, Ariz. The letter was addressed to Quartzsite Chamber of Commerce Repre- sentatives, dated September 17, 2008. Miller states that the "information was erroneously reported." Regarding the paper's statement, "The chamber failed to meet the necessary require- ments to retain their designation and grant", Miller replied, "These are two distinct and separate issues. First, we provide funding to communities through our Teamwork for Effective Arizona Marketing (TEAM) pro- gram. To qualify for funds, an organization is required to attend a TEAM workshop to receive a Certifi cate of Attendance. Second, the Arizona Offi ce of Tourism provides a separate Local Visitor Information Center (LVIC) designation program. Currently, this LVIC program does not have a grant component." Miller goes on to clarify the confusion surrounding funding and grants, "The Quartzsite Chamber of Commerce continues to be the offi cially designated LVIC for the Town of Quartzsite. However, the Town of Quartzsite is the recipient of a TEAM grant (as mentioned above) for the fi scal year 2009 in the amount of $3,393." Regarding eligibility and "special school- ing" Miller states, "For continued designa- tion as a LVIC, visitor center staff must attend training once a year, provided free of charge by the Arizona Offi ce of Tourism, at various locations throughout the state. The Quartzsite Chamber of Commerce attended the annual required workshop in fi scal year 2008, thus completing the requirement for this designation.
