"I didn't know a soul during recruitment, as I was one of the only Texans attempting to join. I knew I would need to depend on my intuition to find my new home. Tri Delta felt comfortable, and luckily, it was mutual!" Susan connected with Mu Chapter instantly and eventually worked to assist in the sisterhood's efforts as the social chairman. "I had a knack for organizing events and at The University of Alabama— that was a full-time job!" She went on to graduate with a bachelor's degree in fine art and a minor in art history, and her interest in art led Susan to a career as a business owner. "Hable Construction began because my sister and I wanted to combine our different skill sets and create a lifestyle that would suit our long-term goals. We have always wanted a healthy work environment for people who are creative, hardworking, fair, and kind. As our lives and families grew, it was important for us to work in a place that would allow us flexibility." Hable Construction also allowed Susan to continue giving back to her community, just as she had done as a Tri Delta. "Mu Chapter's focus on raising money for St. Jude's has always been a source of great pride for me," she shared. "I was asked to make holiday stockings using the patients' artwork about 10 years into owning my business. I love that children were always a focus in our service and one of Tri Delta's top fundraising causes." Susan's sorority sisters eagerly supported her when she decided to start a woman- owned business. "Having those cheerleaders was vital during the initial grind of becoming a new and young business owner. They are still supporters today, and for that, I am so deeply grateful!" That supportive relationship began within the walls of the Tri Delta House. "I don't think I would have gotten to really know others unless I had this opportunity. That was never a problem or a complaint, because we were literally in a slumber party each night," she recalled. "Those are such special times I will always treasure." Susan keeps her Tri Delta bonds alive both in person and online. "Some sisters and I recently set up a WhatsApp account because there were so many of us that other methods of communication couldn't keep up! We share news and plans to meet up for football, dinners, and special gatherings, and we support each other in outfitting the Tri Delta House with art and decor." Susan has an 18-year-old daughter who will be attending The University of Texas in fall 2024; her son is a sophomore in high school in their hometown of Athens, Georgia. She and her husband have been married for 23 years. "I am living part- time in my hometown of Corsicana, Texas, while my sister and I renovate a historic building downtown to become a gallery space opening in the spring of 2024," she shared. "Life stays busy while we spend time with our parents and turn another corner in our now 25-year-old design business." Hable Construction currently has a furniture collection with Hickory Chair and products for the home that include lighting, art, accessories, and textiles. The gallery is called HOEBEL and will be a project space for Susan's artwork as well as fine jewelry and bespoke design.
