David Law '65 Reflects on His Inspiring Career in Biomedical Research Service That Speaks for Itself W hen David Law '65 first arrived at the University of Michigan, he didn't intend to join a fraternity. He changed his mind, however, after befriending twin brothers Alessandro '65 and Richard Bruni '65. Together, they decided to pursue Phi Kappa Psi. "We ended up a part of a large pledge class, many of whom went on to become starters on the UM football team!" Dave recalls. Being a part of a boisterous pledge class helped coax Dave out of his shell. "I was a bit of a shy nerd in high school, so it was nice to discover that I had a personality," he jokes. He earned the trust and loyalty of his brothers, who later elected him to serve a term as house president. Dave earned a bachelor's degree in zoology and chemistry in 1967. Following graduation, he was inducted into the Army and served in Vietnam until 1970, when he returned to the U.S. as a Decorated Combat Infantry Officer. In 1971, Dave began his graduate studies at Wayne State University; he received a master's in biology and microbiology in 1973 and a Ph.D. in molecular genetics and biochemistry in 1981. Between 1981 and 1986, Dave completed his pre-doctoral training at the Children's Hospital of Michigan and in the Biological Sciences department at Wayne State. His postdoctoral training brought him back to the University of Michigan, where he worked with the department of Human Genetics until 1986. "My biomedical research career spanned from 1986 until 2005 and included time working on the human genome project as well as breast and colon cancers," Dave said. In 2006, he transitioned into the role of executive director for Joy-Southfield Community Development Corporation, a non-profit in West Detroit. He remained there until his retirement in 2019. In addition to being a decorated veteran, Dave also received many significant awards during his lengthy career, including the Public Health Service-National Research Service Award, the Anna McKeever Hilliard Visionary Award, the Innovations in Health Care Award, and the National Philanthropy Day Distinguished Volunteer Award. He has also served his community as a teacher, mentor, author, presenter, researcher, and volunteer for a wide selection of organizations. For Dave, the benefits of joining Phi Kappa Psi manifested in personal growth, which impacted his later success. "Being in a fraternity gave me a good deal of self-confidence," he shares. He also values the long-lasting friendships, which have endured throughout the years. These friendships proved to be crucial in the months following Dave's military service. "Several fraternity brothers played an essential role in helping me readapt to civilian life after returning from Vietnam." Dave's fondest memories of Phi Kappa Psi include TGIF dance parties with local live bands, including Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen. "I also had fun with Little LeMans and the Mud Bowl at the Sigma Alpha Epsilon house." During his occasional visits to Ann Arbor, Dave sets aside time to "maintain the strong connections" he has with brothers who still live there. For years, he made it a point to be in town during the Founders' Day events. He encourages any alumni who have drifted away from the brotherhood to reconnect. "Our strong band shall ne'er be broken!" Dave and his wife live in Northville, Michigan, where they spend their time painting, gardening, and landscaping. Dave also enjoys metalwork and wood craftsmanship. If you'd like to reconnect with Dave, you can reach him at davelaw@umich.edu. Dave (right) and other Phi Kappa Psi brothers get together during Vidmer weekend.
