Lennon Martin, of Hazel Green, grows
bushels and bushels of fruits and vegetables
just to give them away.
Since 1994, Martin has been donating his
garden crops to the Downtown Rescue
Mission, neighbors, and anyone else in need
of fresh food.
He took up this quest after seeing young
children lining up at the Downtown Rescue
Mission to eat lunch. He said, "I have to try
to help.''
Since he enjoys working outside in his garden
and regularly has a bumper crop of corn,
okra, tomatoes, green beans, cabbages,
broccoli, watermelons, and cantaloupes, giving
them away has become his mission and a labor
of love.
His wife, Margarette, helps him to distribute
the food and says he is a gifted gardener. Just
about anything he sets his mind to grow, he
can grow, she said.
He does his own composting because he
says the food tastes better.
Is it a green thumb or hard work? "I
don't know," he says. "I just ask God to
bless it.''
He gardens all year, but much of his
crop comes in during spring and early
summer. He usually has greens in early
April and corn before the Fourth of July.
In addition to the Rescue Mission, he
also freely shares with elderly members
of his church and his community. And
most people hear about him from others
who have been blessed by his crops.
His only request is that people get
permission before trampling through
his fields.
