Redstone , s accredited financial counselors can help.. What is a credit freeze, and when would I need it? A credit freeze protects your credit from being accessed by creditors without your consent. It gives an extra layer of protection from people using your identity to obtain new credit. It is a free service and won't affect your credit score. When should I freeze my credit report? You may want to freeze your credit if: • You were part of a data breach. • Your financial or personal information was compromised . • You are a victim of identity theft. • You find unfamiliar activity on your credit report. • You want to be proactive in preventing credit fraud. • You are going through a divorce and want to prevent your future ex-spouse from opening new credit in your name. To freeze your credit, contact each of the three credit bureaus: Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. • Equifax: Call 800-349-9960 or go online. • Experian: Go online to initiate, or call 888-397-3742 for information. • TransUnion: Call 888-909-8872 or go online. To unfreeze your credit, you may contact one, or all three, of the credit bureaus.
