Fortunately, Alice Demming, the current house director at Delta Triton, knows how to adapt to new challenges. After graduating from Miami University of Ohio with a science degree in the 1970s, she accepted a job as a medical technologist for the Cleveland Clinic. In the 1990s, she pursued a different passion and enjoyed working as a cooking school manager at a local grocery store chain, managing and teaching classes throughout Cleveland. Alice was never content to limit her activity to just one area of interest— she also directed a dog rescue that facilitated adoptions for more than 100 animals! When a friend asked if Alice would be interested in becoming house director for a sorority at Ohio University in Athens, Alice jumped at the chance for a new adventure. "I was ready to return home to my roots in Ohio," she recalls. This interaction changed the trajectory of Alice's career and set her on a path that would one day lead her to Purdue. "I was at Ohio State when a house director friend of mine asked me to visit her at her new job," says Alice. "Purdue's campus seemed wonderfully compact and safe, so I immediately applied to Purdue's Greek Life." Phi Sigma Kappa representatives invited her for an interview, "And the rest," she says, "is history!" Alice's first impression of Delta Triton was influenced by the fraternity's stellar reputation. "After reviewing the campus and the National information, it was clear that this was a growing house in a great, central location," she remembers. "House directors have a strong network and share opinions all through the year. Their reviews of Purdue and Phi Sigma Kappa were very positive." She has settled into a routine at the chapter house, although the days are anything but repetitive. "I can get a knock on the door at any time of the day or night! People are coming in and out of the house all day, so I always try to always be available." One of Alice's primary focuses is forging strong relationships with the collegians in her care. "I attend the executive committee meetings and meet weekly with the president and house manager," she says. "I love getting to know the members and working with them directly." Alice is uniquely equipped to provide support and guidance, and she brings a mature perspective and a wealth of wisdom to the table. "Filling and maintaining the house with qualified members is a constant test for everyone. I can only hope that the men will know that my experience and knowledge is available to them if they ever want or need help." For Alice, the reward is in the ever-changing nature of the days she spends with the residents. "As odd of a lifestyle that it is, my life is so fulfilling!" When she isn't maintaining the house and caring for its residents, Alice finds plenty of other ways to keep her mind and hands busy. "I enjoy learning and am constantly taking online classes, the latest being my certificate for medical coding." Our spring associate class.
