Spring 2023 PHI SIGMA KAPPA FRATERNITY AT PURDUE UNIVERSITY Phi Sig Express Writing the Future of Delta Triton Writing the Future of Delta Triton ACTIVES AND ALUMNI WORK TOGETHER ON A POSITIVE BROTHERHOOD Delta Triton's go-kart for the 66th Purdue Grand Prix. John Lendrum '80 (left) and Gregg Grote '83. Chess is regaining popularity among young people! Who knew? T he first year back to "normal" post-COVID has been challenging for Delta Triton. The Greek system in general is under ever-increasing scrutiny. The active chapter got caught up in the increased scrutiny and is on probation through 2024. (Details were provided via email earlier in the year; email alumni@302waldron.org if you didn't receive the previous updates.) The alumni board, in partnership with Phi Sigma Kappa National, made some tough decisions, and membership numbers have decreased as we work with the actives to rebuild the brotherhood—with more focus on the Cardinal Principles and less focus on the social aspects of Greek life. Alumni support is more important than ever as we work to ensure the future of Delta Triton. Please note that "support" in the above paragraph does not refer to financial support, or at least not exclusively. There are many ways to help. Reach out if you would like to help via your time or talent— or if you want to write a check! One way you can help is to get involved with the alumni advisory board. The AAB works with the actives to mentor them in both one-on-one and group situations, discussing ongoing chapter operations and helping develop new procedures as needed. The AAB acts in support of the alumni board, which serves as the housing corporation for Delta Triton. The ongoing commitment of the alumni board is to ensure a safe and secure environment with a strong financial position. The list of volunteers below is not complete. The AAB's flexible charter allows us to work with any alumni who want to help, so check in with Alumni Board President Kevin Chase '01 at chasekevinn@gmail.com if you would like to get involved. The inaugural dinner was held on April 1 at the chapter house. Attendees included John Lendrum '80, Kevin Chase, James Russell '19, Olinto Perez '22, Dan Clark '16, Gregg Grote '83, Dave Franzman '80, and Peter Schulz '20. The event was a bit last-minute in nature; next year, we'll announce it much further in advance and hopefully get a few more alumni to make the trip to 302 Waldron. Also, the actives have purchased a used pool table. Hopefully, the slate is more level than the table we had in the party room in the 1980s! Back to the topic of support, the Grand Prix team asked for our help to close a $4,000 gap in their budget. They hit their fundraising goal in two days, so big thanks to all who helped! Also, in a trend you probably didn't see coming, chess is growing in popularity—not just in our chapter house, but with young people everywhere. Journalists are trying to track down the origin of this resurgence of interest in chess. Thinking back, I remember Hearts and Spades being card games we spent too much time on. What games took over the house when you were there? Shoot me an email at alumni@302waldron.org with any good stories and we'll compile them into a feature for a future newsletter. The actives have built a nice alumni-active networking website at pskdeltatriton.com to enable job networking, internships, etc. Please take a look and register! If you have questions about the site, please contact either Ethan Archer '22 at ethanalexanderarcher@gmail.com or Alex Shellow '23 at ashellow@gmail.com. Also, the alumni board still needs a treasurer. If you have two to five hours a month and accounting/finance skills, we need you to help keep the books in order. Please email Kevin at chasekevinm@gmail.com for more information. We hope everybody has a pleasant and fun summer, and we'll see you at Homecoming on September 30. Damn Proud!
