THE CORDELT BETA OMICRON CHAPTER OF DELTA TAU DELTA AT CORNELL UNIVER SI T Y SPRING 2023 Connect with ΔTΔ Cornell Online Delta Tau Delta at Cornell cornelldelts.org T he last month or so has been a Delt-heavy period for me, and it has been glorious! First, I crashed the annual Orlando "Bad Golf" trip in late March, which is mostly Delts from the '80s who get together annually at an event started by Jeff Katz '86 several years ago. A group of 16 Delts and eight Delt wives/dates shared a single house for a long weekend of golf, revelry (fancy word for drinking and debauchery), and some really bad singing. (As the only Delt from the '90s there, it was nice to be the youngest for something for the first time in a long time.) Next came the annual trip for the Delt class of '90 (plus Chris Bourque '91) to the Frozen Four, which this year was in Tampa, Florida. It was also a great weekend of college hockey (it would have been even better if Cornell had beaten BU!), revelry, and enjoying inside jokes and stories from years gone by. I look forward to seeing more Delts at our reunion in June and then at Homecoming in September! CAMPAIGN AND HOUSING UPDATES That leads me to the capital campaign and Shelter renovation projects. The capital campaign is still going strong, with over $2.42 million donated/pledged to date! If you'd like to donate, you can do so by scanning the QR code or visiting tinyurl.com/BetaOmicron. With enough donations in hand to do some major pieces of renovation, we have been working with Cornell to get a major set of projects planned and executed. Cornell can be rather frustrating to work with, and despite our best efforts, we discovered some new Cornell processes for major projects. They need to be pre-planned by over a year in advance into the university's master plan, and then they require additional approvals from a planning board before a contract can be signed—a requirement that was never mentioned in the five years we have been working on this with the university. As a result, the first large-scale renovations will be pushed to summer 2024. Mike Bonacum '10, our new House Corporation president, and Andy Howlett '07 have been meeting with Cornell biweekly and getting updated via email weekly. We hope this cadence will keep everything on track. BASED ON THIS, OUR PLAN HAS THREE MAIN STEPS: 1. We will execute some major "topical updates" during summer 2023 (e.g., removing the rec room paneling and stripping and painting those walls) that do not require a competitive design phase and won't be immediately undone by future renovations. 2. We will contract the design of all of phase one (both "gang" bathrooms, the women's restroom, entryway, foyer, laundry room, and kitchen grease hood and grease trap) ASAP with Ashley McGraw (the same firm that did the master plan) with the intent to do that design work this summer and have drawings finished by Homecoming. 3. We will execute phase one. Some projects may be done in winter 2023-24 based on the recommendation of the builder for what could be packaged and finished. The rest will be done in summer 2024. Candidly, we had hoped to do more work this summer, but we will get a start on things and then stay on top of Cornell to ensure we get step three done as described. All that said, the capital campaign has been an amazing show of the strength of our brotherhood, and I am no less committed to it today than I was when we started this journey. Thanks for your continued support as we work to ensure the future of Delts at Cornell!
