I n 1959, Bill Kellstrom '60 and a friend drove to Ames with no place to live. Both assumed they would join a fraternity and spent the entire pledge week at various houses. Eventually, Bill got a call from his friend at PIKE, saying, "Why don't you come over? I really like these guys!" Bill soon found he liked Pi Kappa Alpha as well—both the house and the people in it. What now seems like a random decision became a truly important turning point in Bill's life. His father died during Bill's senior year of high school, and his mom later moved in with his sister. "When I moved into the PIKE house, it became my real home, and these men became my brothers," he said. "I kind of grew up in that house." Some of Bill's favorite PIKE memories include the nights spent playing bridge (which he still plays today) and Work Week (when everyone came back to prepare for fall recruitment). "Everybody was really committed to making that house great and getting new members," Bill recalls. "The camaraderie among brothers was just incredible." In high school, Bill enjoyed working at his dad's drugstore; it was busy, but he proved to be good at the job. Bill's worth ethic grew even stronger at Alpha Phi, which felt like a leadership school as he learned to cooperate with other members and get things done. He served as secretary, vice president, and president during his undergraduate years. "I look back on those years and think, wow, did you learn a lot there!" When Alpha Phi began its 2001 capital campaign, Bill had just retired and welcomed the chance to reconnect with the brotherhood. He moved from Houston to Omaha during the campaign, became one of its larger donors, and joined the House Corporation to help keep the Chapter House in shape. Today, Bill is proud to do his part once again on the board for the 2112: The House That Built Us campaign. This role entails working with brothers such as Ron Calta '58 to reach alumni from the early 1960s and encourage them to support Alpha Phi's renovation plans. Bill has also made a generous pledge to the new campaign, and he hopes fellow Pikes who have felt the same zeal for the brotherhood will join him. "I just love that house, so I always want to help." Bill lives in Silverthorne, Colorado, where he moved after his wife passed away. His kids and grandchildren live in Denver, only an hour away. "This is my heavenly retirement spot!" You can connect with Bill at billkellstrom@gmail.com.
