PAGE 2 TAU TALK Enjoying the Waves of Life C hoosing a fraternity can be a major decision, but for Sean Hollonbeck '00, the choice was easy. His older brother, Brandon '97, was a Gamma Upsilon, and Sean would visit him often at the chapter house. What cemented his choice, however, was a recruitment trip to Apple River during the summer before his freshman year. "Seeing the brotherhood firsthand through that trip really sealed the deal for me." Many of Sean's favorite times with ATΩ were the warm fall days spent on the house deck. His biggest lesson from the fraternity was on building relationships; he made many lasting friendships with people he probably wouldn't have met otherwise, and he also learned to work with folks he wasn't always fond of. Sean was honored to serve as Homecoming chairman in the fall of 2000, and although Gamma Upsilon didn't win, they were all thrilled with the chapter's lawn display. Sean has been the owner and CEO of KC Watersports, a cable wakeboarding park in the Kansas City area, since 2011. He loves what he does and is proud to have created a life where he decides his own schedule. "While I'm admittedly a workaholic, I can step away and take a break when I need," he said. "Being able to control your own time is truly a gift." For the past few summers, Sean has hosted an informal Gamma Upsilon reunion at KC Watersports—one of his favorite ways to keep up with his brothers. "It's definitely a great time, sitting around and telling all the old war stories. If anyone is interested in joining, let me know!" Sean lives in Overland Park, Kansas, and loves being outdoors (especially in or near the water) as much as possible. He also enjoys live music, travel, and time with his family.
