5 Luke Schaefer Champlin, Minn. Major: Finance, management, and leadership "Spending late nights with my pledge brothers has yielded some of my favorite memories in college. I am grateful to be able to live in this beautiful house with my best friends. It is a chance you only get once in your life." Ethan Slaggie Parkville, Mo. Major: Psychology pre-business "I'm excited to get to know everybody that is going to come through the Hutt while I am here. Every year, for the next three years, I'll get to have 20-plus more guys whom I'll have a tight bond with for the rest of my life. I don't think there's any other house that could've done that for me." Eli Stahl West Des Moines, Iowa Major: Marketing "The bonds that I've made these past months with guys from all over the nation are unlike anything else. I've found others who will be in my life forever from pledgeship. I enjoy how everybody in the house is so different from one another." Daly Steinhauser Fairway, Kan. Major: Finance "This house pushes me to be my best self. I am very excited to see how my pledge class and I affect the Hutt during our time [on campus]." Harrison Voth Cheney, Kan. Major: Mechanical engineering "Getting so close with 22 other guys is something I wouldn't have gotten without pledgeship. I look forward to meeting future Hutters and gaining more connections as the years come along." Robert White Prairie Village, Kan. Major: Finance "The locker room was a great experience. I loved living with all my pledge brothers. I can't wait to meet the next round of guys who come through the house and help them become better people." I n a show of solidarity and support, 60 members of the house bussed overnight to surprise Luke Karel '26 and give him the initiation ceremony he deserved. Luke's story inspired us all, and we wanted to do something special to show him how much we care. On February 19th, Alpha Nu embarked on a special trip to Denver, Colorado, to support and initiate Luke. For those that don't know, Luke has been diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia, a type of cancer that he has already battled and defeated in the past. His cancer relapsed in the middle of last semester, and Luke had to move back home to begin treatment. As we arrived at Blake Street Tavern in downtown Denver, we began preparing for Luke's arrival. He was taken aback by the love and support from his brothers, and it was a moment none of us will ever forget. When We Talk Brotherhood—We Mean It! Undergraduates Honor New Bonds with Surprise Initiation in Colorado In February 2023, over 60 brothers visited Luke Karel '26 in Colorado. Luke's leukemia relapsed in the fall, and he, unfortunately, could not attend the initiation ceremony of his pledge class. We made sure to bring the fun to him! E mail recruitment@kansasbeta.org or visit kansasbeta.org/recruitment. Please include his name, contact information, hometown, high school, GPA, ACT/SAT (if applicable), and important involvements. A résumé that includes this information works best, if available. Please also include your relationship to him and briefly explain why you believe he would make a great candidate. With our recruitment process beginning in the fall and on pace to conclude by the end of the school year, spots in the upcoming class are becoming more limited. Because of this, we ask that any recruitment recommendations are sent as soon as possible to give the recruitment chairmen adequate time to get to know the rushee before the conclusion of our recruitment process.
