From classmates to pledge brothers, those people a young man surrounds himself with have a tremendous impact on their college years. "I immigrated to the United States with my family just two years prior to coming to Colorado School of Mines," said Darek Bruzgo '95, who was unfamiliar with Greek life in American college culture. "I did not know anything about Fraternities. During my freshman year, I developed friendships with classmates pledging SigEp. They invited me to the house; I saw the benefit of having access to upperclassmen and their advice." SHARING EXPERIENCES Darek joined the brotherhood during sophomore year, sharing interests like cycling with brothers he is still glad to stay in touch with today. He even experienced off-roading for the first time with the SigEps, exploring new parts of Colorado with a great group of friends. When a truck broke down on one mud-bogging adventure, he admired the camaraderie of the young, future engineers working together to fix the problem. Preparing for his engineering career, Darek recognized Colorado Delta's impact on his professional development. He urges today's undergraduates to grow their network and take advantage of opportunities in front of them. "One [experience] that stands out was the circle after Chapter meetings. All brothers would briefly share what they are working on, what's going on, challenges, good things, happy things, not-so-happy things—we would all listen. Being a good listener is critical to being a good leader." BROTHERLY BUSINESS Prior to graduation, Darek worked a summer engineering internship with Jetstream Inc. He later joined the company as a design engineer after graduation. Later in 1996, Darek began D&R CNC Machining Inc. alongside Robert Bruzgo '95. "We purchased our first CNC machine in 1996 and officially opened on March 6," Darek shared. "I made a transition to full-time at D&R in August 1996, just five months after we started the business." Since then, Darek has been proud to operate the business alongside Robert for 27 years. Darek is currently the company's CEO and President, and he even toured the Mori Seiki (now DMG MORI) factory in Japan. It was a major honor for Darek to be invited by a former professor onto a panel of industry experts for CSM's engineering capstone course. He later joined the faculty of Capstone Senior Design for four years. STILL A LOYAL SIGEP Looking back on his college years, Darek is grateful for his SigEp experience and the opportunities it provided. He is married to his wife, Serena, and they have two children in elementary school. The Bruzgo family enjoys many outdoor activities, and Darek is always glad to join fellow SigEps for fly- fishing.
