That soon changed when he decided to go through recruitment during his freshman year. Although he visited several fraternities, he was attracted to the strong sense of brotherhood at Sigma Chi and knew it was the place for him. EXPANDED HORIZONS Coming from a small, blue-collar town in western Pennsylvania, Bill didn't have a big worldview, but spending time with a diverse group of brothers in Sigma Chi helped expand it, shaping him to be who he is today. "I remember some constructive criticism I received from brother Jim Herndon '70 regarding my clothing choices," he shared. "I think of him to this day when I ask myself if I am dressing appropriately for whatever function I might be attending." Mu Mu Chapter not only exposed Bill to various backgrounds, but it also taught him how to balance work and the need for social time, and he has many fond memories with the brotherhood. Many of his greatest memories involved the relationship his pin mate, Mary Jo Ermacoff, had with his brothers as Chapter Sweetheart. That relationship remained strong, and shortly after college, over 30 brothers attended their wedding and spontaneously sang the "Sweetheart of Sigma Chi." GETTING INVOLVED After Todd Ware '71 explained to Bill about the need for chapter house improvements, Bill became inspired to support For 700 North High: The Campaign for Mu Mu. Bill wants his brothers to get involved too! As an Era leader, he has already recruited several brothers to be class leaders and encourages others to think about how much Sigma Chi has meant to them. A LEADER FOR LIFE Bill earned his master's degree in nuclear engineering from the University of New Mexico while serving in the Air Force, and from there, began his 35-year Westinghouse career, where he was involved in the design of commercial nuclear power plants before moving on to designing new reactors for the production of special nuclear materials. He later became vice president of nuclear operations at Fluor Corporation and remained in that position until he retired last July. "I often wonder how a guy from Brush Valley, Pennsylvania, could have been exposed to so many challenging opportunities important to our national defense and achieved success working on several nuclear projects around the world," he said. "The answer is quite simple—as a member of Mu Mu Chapter and also serving as Magister, I met brothers from varied economic and social backgrounds, which motivated me over my entire career." FAMILY AND FRIENDSHIP Bill is now married for the second time, as Mary Jo passed away 22 years ago. He has two adult children and five grandchildren, and his second wife, Debbie, has two adult children. All their children are successful and independent, which as parents is all they can ask for. In retirement, Bill hopes to focus more on developing his hobbies. Right now, he enjoys babysitting his grandkids, golfing, and learning how to fish from Todd. He is grateful for the lifelong friendships he developed at Mu Mu and continues to stay in touch with his brothers. To celebrate their 50 years of friendship, he, Todd, Scott Meikle '73, Lou Rocchini '71, Bob Joy '71, and their wives took a week-long trip to Williamsburg, Virginia.
