MAN OF CHARACTER How David Imler '68 Found His Way Back Home I t had been more than 40 years since David Imler '68 decided to come back and visit Purdue. While the campus has changed drastically with new buildings and a plethora of dining options, Beta Sigma Psi itself has remained the same. Until recently, David had little involvement with the Chapter. He always read the periodical reports, but recently decided it was in the best interest of his undergraduate brothers and the brothers to come and volunteer his time. Now, he gives back to Beta both financially and with his time as he participates in alumni meetings. "There appears to be improved alumni leadership recently and that encourages me to be more active," David shared. "However, we need to have alumni participating more intently both for the physical plant and in recruiting." Due to the profound impact that Fraternity had on his life as a collegian, David was ready to give back. Beta Chapter provided David with a safe space for him to become more comfortable socially and in leadership roles. This immediate skill would become a long-term one that David would go on to use as a physician. "The experiences prepared me professionally," David shared. "I could accept challenges more readily, and Beta Chapter gave me better self-confidence." During his time as a physician, he was awarded numerous accolades, including the 2018 Kathy Green Mission in Medicine Award from Mercy Health; 2010 Visionary Citizen of the Year Northwest Ohio; and the 2021 Kris Gill Servant Leadership. Aside from leadership skills, Beta Sigma Psi also taught David about personal relationships. "I stay in touch with brothers, especially those who I was in their weddings." David and his wife, Michele, have been blessed with two sons, Daniel and Timothy, who are professors in medicine at IU and Stanford. They also have six wonderful grandchildren. To keep busy, he enjoys racing his sailboat, playing golf, gardening, and actively participating as leadership in his church. You can connect with David at dvdimler@gmail.com
