e Washington Alpha Delt 4 R ecruitment can be a trying time filled with a lot of pressure and anxiety, not knowing what the future will hold. On top of that, Hayden Hastings '24 decided to go through Alpha Delt's recruitment during the COVID pandemic, bringing in another layer of stress. As a member of the 2020 pledge class, it was very difficult to reach out and tour houses; however, the Alpha Delt recruitment chairmen were the only ones who reached out incessantly and seemed to be putting in significantly more effort into the process than other houses. "The safety I feel both physically and mentally are the reasons I stayed," he said. "Everyone here is so supportive, and my confidence with my self, my personality, and my body have gotten so much stronger." Now, as the world reopens, Hayden is eager to get into the swing of things. "One of my favorite experiences has been coming out of lockdowns and seeing everything the Chapter House functions in a normal year for the first time," he shared. "From game days to fundraisers to exchanges and serenades, it's been great!" Hayden has taken advantage of the return to normal and held a few minor positions, including Vantage chairman and Initiation week chairman. He was even recently elected as vice president for the 2023 school year and is very excited to have a regular year in the Temple, which he has been dreaming of since joining. OPPORTUNITIES TO GROW OPPORTUNITIES TO GROW "As vice president, I plan to help our program coordinator throw a job fair where Alumni can have the chance to come, or possibly send in a piece, to speak about what major they were at UW and what jobs they held after college. This would give members a chance to see what opportunities a specific major can offer." "Before any of this, it felt scary trying to think of the future, and I thought I had to pick a major even if I didn't like it just to make sure I got a job," Hayden said. "But I interviewed active members over Zoom, including Alumni Board President Howard Strickler '63, about their different majors to find out which was the best fit for me." Hayden ended up becoming a double major in business and international studies, thanks to the help of the countless brothers he talked to. LOOKING TO THE FUTURE LOOKING TO THE FUTURE Outside of ADP, Hayden lived in South Korea for three months, tutoring kids in English, learning the culture, and practicing the language. "I'm currently starting new clubs with my friend Ethan Staats '24, including a formal dinner book club. "Next summer, I want to work in a Spanish-speaking country, preferably Latin America," he shared. "After college, I am strongly considering joining the Peace Corps for two years and traveling."
