Washington Alpha Delt Washington Alpha Delt e e A PUBLICATION OF THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST ALUMNI OF ALPHA DELTA PHI • WINTER 2022 T he Washington Chapter is now emerging into a new era. Looking back, we have been existing in a liminal space. The main conditions that produced that liminality were the remodel/reconstruction of the Chapter House, the almost complete disruption of the COVID pandemic, and moving to the temporary DU property. The old reality was gone, and no one knew for sure what the new reality would bring. This produced anxiety for Alumni and undergraduate members alike. We are just now emerging into our way forward. Please direct your attention to the article written by Brother Steve Loyd on page 3. FINDING BALANCE New expectations are arising. Alumni Board expectations are high because of the time, energy, and financial commitments given to make the remodel happen. The undergraduates, on the other hand, are seeking newer degrees of freedom with a desire to reassert their leadership of the undergraduate experience. At times, these two drives and values cause friction. After many discussions with all concerned, we continue to establish a balance between the two. ALUMNI BOARD CHANGES We are now experiencing big changes within our Alumni Board. First, we lost Brother John Feltis '65 through his unanticipated death from cancer. Next, we received the resignation of Brothers Jeff MacNichols '94, Nate Sewell '15, and Steve Loyd '69, who wished to pursue career demands and new business opportunities. We give our greatest thanks to these exceptional Brothers for their time, devotion, and commitment to the capital campaign and the rebuild of the Chapter. Thankfully, as we go to press, Brothers Wade Foley '94 and Brian Thompson '95 have agreed to join the Board. We continue to search additional new members and one to assume the duties of Board Treasurer. UNIVERSITY RELATIONS The Alumni Board will continue to work on changes to the organizational culture of the Chapter and the challenges of the future. The collegians all know this, and each EC is fully aware of the need. The relationship with University administration places high expectations on the Greek system and fraternities for improving behavioral standards. Additionally, public opinion through much of the popular press reports only on the negative. The positives are overlooked. The U of W fraternity academic performance ranks higher than the all-men's academic performance. Where do you read about the charitable activities of many fraternities? For example, prior to the pandemic, ADPhi raised a total of $80,000 for Seattle Children's Hospital. STRENGTHENING THE LEGACY As Alumni Board President, nothing has been more rewarding to me personally than witnessing and advising Chapter leaders taking command and making executive decisions. It is incredible to witness firsthand the leadership that emerges and develops from our undergraduates. Each EC experiences very trying tests in upholding behavioral standards, even on occasion requiring very difficult decisions on not retaining individuals who fail. These are very bright young men, and we are proud to be associated with them. Special thanks go to the outgoing EC: President Preston Ball '24, for his exceptional leadership in difficult transitions, VP Jack Murphy '23 for his support of Preston and leadership: Risk Manager Oliver Watkins '24 for his constant oversight of health and behavioral issues; House Manager Alban Vukaj '22 for managing the move from the DU property and settling in the new chapter house: Treasurer Thomas Loftin '24, handling the OmegaFi accounts and tracking chapter expenses: Secretary Ethan Staats '24, for his active support of the EC decision making and keeping records up to date.
