WASHINGTON ALPHA 3 T he path to joining Sigma Phi Epsilon looks different for every young man. Some enter college without any plans to join a fraternity, but personal connections draw them into a brotherhood for life. This was the case for Douglas "Dougie" Hansen '08, as he learned about the shared values and what makes SigEp so unique. "At the time, the president was someone I graduated high school with, Jake Tyrrell '07. After speaking with Josh Palmer '08, Shawn Murphy '08, and Jake Peterson '07, I knew I wanted to be involved in an organization full of guys with passion and integrity." Doug had a long and winding road to his current career, and he has the brotherhood to thank for valuable lessons in teamwork and problem-solving. After multiple jobs including retail management and moving/delivery services, he found an opportunity to break into information technology. "I took a chance joining a limited project, and then got an IT certificate that really paid off and got me to where I am today," Doug said. "I worked as a revenue agent first, and then as a tax discovery agent. Now I'm working as an IT quality assurance tester." While Doug worked hard to get to where he is now, he also recognizes the importance of networking and keeping connections. Sigma Phi Epsilon's alumni network is one such example of lifelong connections that can provide opportunities for brothers throughout life. "Build relationships and build bridges; don't burn them." After college, Doug made sure to keep his connection to SigEp strong. He learned the value of serving the brotherhood as an undergraduate recruiting captain, and he now serves as vice president of recruitment strategy for the AVC Board. Aside from fraternal service, Doug enjoys weekends with fellow alumni whenever possible. "It's hard to put my finger on one [specific memory] because there are so many, and I am still very close with many of my brothers," Doug said. "I continue to create new memories with them to this day!" Doug often spends Cougar football Saturdays with his brothers. In his spare time, he enjoys climbing, skiing, and fishing throughout the PNW. You can connect with Doug at douglasehansen@gmail.com. "I wouldn't be who I am today without being a SigEp."
