ALPHA TAU OMEGA GAMMA GAMMA CHAPTER ROSE-HULMAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY FALL 2022 W hen the house renovation project was announced, the Gamma Gamma Class of 1988 was more than happy to step up to the challenge. One of our first meetings centered on how we could raise enough money to name the basketball court after our beloved brother, Kenny Miller, whom we had lost early on in June of 2003. Kenny loved to play basketball, so it was so fitting for us to dedi- cate the renovated court in his honor. When some of our 1988 alumnae visited the house during homecoming in 2021 to check out the start of renovations, Dave Clauss and Todd Hoevener reported back that the basket- ball court really needed major renovation if we wanted to dedicate it in Kenny's honor. A few brothers, led by Nathan Wright and Dave Troyer, stepped up to convince the class of 1988 to donate a second time around to tear down and rebuild the court. Once again, we rose to the challenge and raised enough to fully renovate the basketball court. Here is a little more background on Kenny Miller: Kenny started out as an ATΩ at a Kentucky college before dropping out and enlisting in the Army. After various posts, the Army saw potential in Kenny and sent him back to college to become an officer. He chose Rose-Hulman and quickly became the lead cadet of our ROTC program. After grad- uating as a Chemical Engineer in 1988, he went to South Korea for his first assignment. There he met his wife Lee and had 2 children, Tommy & Michael. Kenny loved to learn and completed his graduate school degree in Inter- national Relations from Yale University. Kenny was the type of person who always wanted to be in the most difficult and chal- lenging situations. He was constantly striving to be the best. After he achieved his goal to become a Green Beret which is the Army's Special Forces unit, Kenny was assigned to Panama to help with the transition of Manuel Noriega. The Green Berets are military leg- ends for service members and civilians alike. They take on terrorists through quiet, guerilla war-style missions in foreign countries and operate in various environments including city fighting, jungle warfare and desert scout- ing. After Panama, Kenny's next assignment was in Ecuador, where he worked with the local forces, being fluent in both Spanish and Portuguese. His final assignment was in Bo- livia where he obtained the rank of Major in the Special Forces. Unfortunately, Kenny was tragically killed with his superior officer and guide on a mountain climb in June 2003. During Homecoming this year, the Class of 1988 was proud to be back on campus to un- veil the all-new Kenny Miller basketball court. It looked fantastic and we hope that future generations of brothers will enjoy it as much as Kenny and the rest of our class did. Kenny Miller's playing style on the court could best be described as aggressive with lots of sharp elbows thrown. So…when you go up for a rebound at the new ATΩ court, watch out since there just might be someone that embodies Kenny's spirit of play. When asked to describe Kenny, many broth- ers would say that he was "bigger than life!" Kenny Miller was a true brother in good times and in bad. One ATΩ brother said it best when he said that there are many who thought of Kenny Miller as one of their best friends, if not their best friend. Kenny was a special individual. As we always liked to say: He was a brother by choice, not by birth. The Class of 1988 was very blessed to have Kenny Miller as a brother and friend, and we are so pleased to be able to name the newly renovated bas- ketball court in his honor.
