BETA RAYS A PUBLICATION OF BETA SIGMA PSI AT PURDUE UNIVERSITY SUMMER 2022 T he Beta Chapter brotherhood is upheld by loyalty and faith. Dane Griffin '82 learned this in his freshman year, where he always noticed 50-60 brothers attending church on Sundays. "Who are these guys?" he thought to himself. Dane had no housing arrangements prepared for his sophomore year, but one fateful introduction to the brothers of Beta Chapter gave him the foundation he needed for a successful education at Purdue University. "I could have slept in that morning, but for some reason God made me get up and walk across campus to get to Church," Dane said. "I remember telling friends and family that I had joined a Lutheran fraternity and would be moving in in the fall. Naturally, most people only heard 'fraternity,' but I had no problem with explaining the 'Lutheran' part time and time again." During his active years, Dane served as social chairman for two years while earning a degree in public relations with a minor in supervision. Some of his favorite memories with the chapter include dinners with collared shirts every night, attending church most Sundays with brothers, spring break trips with friends, and softball games at Mulberry Park. "I could probably go on forever," Dane said about his fond times with Beta Sigma Psi. He emphasized the point that the Beta Sig house wasn't a social fraternity, but a Lutheran fraternity first and foremost. Unsatisfied with his career after college, Dane had faith that his path would change. "I was working a job that I wasn't too fond of, and I prayed for help finding a job in the construction field," he said. Dane fortunately received a call from two childhood friends with a job offer, and since then, Dane has spent 30 years as a roofing distribution manager. Dane remarks that he was not as well-behaved when he was younger as he could have been, but Beta Chapter guided him to a dedicated life to Christ. "I can assure you that the guidance, structure, and camaraderie that I learned in the Beta Sig house probably saved my life in short," he said. "The friends I made, the lessons I learned, and the importance of Christ all played a major role in who I am today, and it all started at our Lutheran fraternity at 525 University." Dane reunited with eight brothers nearly a decade ago, though the brotherhood mourned the loss of Stan Hoffman '80 shortly afterward. Since then, the brothers have made their reunion a staple of the summer. Dane has two daughters and two sons. His oldest daughter graduated from The Ohio State University, and his second daughter from Ball State University. His oldest son graduated from Indiana University, and the younger of the two is a welder and pipefitter. The family enjoys spending time together, sitting around the fire pit. Faith in the Fraternity Dane Griffin '82 Shares His Story of a Brotherhood Bound by Christ O ver the last several months, the Lafayette Alumni Board of Beta Chapter and the actives have continued to work on the long-term vision and plan to ensure the continuing mission of Beta Sigma Psi at Purdue. We remain committed to equipping future Christ-like servant leaders for our families, churches, communities, and society. Notably, the success of our efforts will continue to rely on your financial support and assistance with recruitment. STATUS OF FUNDRAISING In the board's correspondence earlier this year, we mentioned that Challenge Gifts totaling $25,000 had been received from two very generous (anonymous) alumni. We are pleased to report that we are well on our way to meeting the challenge with additional gifts of over $16,000 received thus far. This leaves an additional $9,000 needed to fully meet the challenge. To date, the Vision Ad Astra campaign has raised over $121,000. Tremendous thanks to Alumni Board Treasurer David Gross '08, who, in addition to taking care of all the day-to-day house finances, has also managed Vision Ad Astra contributions. As noted above, we are within a few thousand dollars of meeting our fundraising goal. If you are willing Thank You for Your Loyal Support, Alumni! AN UPDATE ON VISION AD ASTRA (Continued on page 2)
