The fraternity family, from left: Caleb Lowry '24, Ethan Staats '24, Preston Ball '23, Michael Kowalchuk '22, and Zachary Flagler '25. W hen attending school in a new state, a fraternity can often feel like a new family. Originally from Atlanta, Georgia, Ethan Staats '24 was attracted to the University of Washington because of the state's geography and Seattle's place in the tech industry. What Ethan found was an open and accepting brotherhood in Alpha Delta Phi, where he is able to form new friendships with fellow members while pursuing his interests. "The men seemed very driven and passionate," Ethan said. "One of the biggest connections I have made is with the members of my fraternity family. The five of us hang out on a weekly basis and have become very close." Wanting to serve Washington Chapter, Ethan became secretary and fulfills tasks such as recording Chapter meetings, taking attendance, managing contact information, and sorting the Chapter House's mail. He also manages a point system for determining room placement. Some of Ethan's accomplishments in the secretary role include rewriting Chapter bylaws, documenting the roles of house positions, and forming a feedback system for Brothers with house positions. While serving the Chapter, Ethan is pursuing a bioengineering degree. He hopes to continue his studies in medical school, utilizing his skills to enhance medicine and healthcare. Outside of the classroom, Ethan is an undergraduate research assistant at the Washington Nanofabrication Facility. He oversees the facility's chemical procurement while assisting in maintenance of the lab's cleanroom and plasma etching equipment. "Tommy McCoy '21 has had a huge impact on my experience at Alpha Delta Phi," Ethan said. "He is another bioengineering major and has provided me with crucial advice and encouragement." Tommy's commitment to the fraternity as house manager motivated Ethan to find a balance in his life between academics, morals, and socializing. "I also fondly remember my motivation to join Alpha Delta Phi revolving around a conversation I had with Tommy during recruitment. I thought it was so exciting that the recruitment chairmen found him to talk with me because of my interest in bioengineering." As an active Chapter member, one of Ethan's favorite memories comes from a situation that could have been remembered negatively. When he and a few pledge class members contracted COVID, they turned their quarantine into a weeklong sleepover instead, all of them choosing to cram into one room and make the most of their time together. Ethan also recalls hiking through the Enchantments in summer 2021 with Arjun Hara '24 and seniors Brooks Lierle '22 and Sam Levin '21, enjoying the spontaneous experience with Brothers he hadn't spent as much time with. "It spoke volumes about how interconnected the Chapter is," he said. Another fond memory Ethan shared with his close fraternity family was taking a road trip to Auburn, California, to ski in Lake Tahoe for a weekend. Aside from fraternity life, Ethan is a member of the Husky Sailing Team. He also competes with a Seattle sailing team, which is participating in the J/24 World Championship this summer in Corpus Christi, Texas. Last November, Ethan competed with a Tacoma- based team and sailed around the San Juan Islands during a race. Ethan looks forward to the Washington Chapter's new Temple, and he hopes for new opportunities to make memories with his fraternity family. You can connect with Ethan at ethan.staatsjr@gmail.com.
