SPRING 2022 ALABAMA BETA s THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA SIGMA PHI EPSILON Inside Onward and Upward – p. 2 Welcome to the Brotherhood! – p. 3 The Honor of a Lifetime – p. 4 F raternity brothers can come from very different backgrounds. Scott Knighton '07 went straight into the Air Force after high school and later transferred to the Air National Guard. After enrolling at the University of Alabama in the spring of 2004, he found himself on his own and no longer with that sense of camaraderie he had during his military years. "I was in something with people my age, and I had a unit I was a part of," Scott said. "I know what it's like to have a common goal; you're going through experiences together, and you basically have a brotherhood." After that solitary spring semester, Scott took a summer class where he met several SigEp brothers and an alumnus instructor and ended up finding that brotherhood again. He decided to officially join in the fall. Serving as vice president of communications and vice president of finance, Scott did whatever he could to contribute to the Chapter's success. His time with Alabama Beta Chapter helped him develop as a professional while he found different ways to get involved on campus, and he suggests all undergraduates do the same. "Utilize the alumni network and the parent network of brothers to find internship opportunities," he said. "Be concerned about the kind of experiences and exposure you can get to different types of jobs. You're there to come out on the back end better than when you went in … to be prepared to enter the workforce and be successful. There's always chances for negative influences, but don't allow any of that stuff to outweigh the good." Scott's professional life greatly benefited from his SigEp connections. The father of one alumni brother sent Scott all over the South to interview financial advisors in firms for a better understanding of their careers. After graduation, Scott applied his knowledge by growing a family-owned manufacturing business with a partner who was also in a fraternity at Alabama. After nearly two decades of operations, he currently works as co-CEO of the manufacturing company H ello from Tuscaloosa! After a long period of disconnect, reuniting with everyone throughout the past year has been surreal. Between tailgates during football season or the recent Parents Weekend and Alumni Day, gathering together again at the Chapter House has been a joy to see. We hope to see event more faces and meet new brothers in the fall during the 2022-23 school year. Whether Alabama Beta is doing philanthropy work or getting involved on campus, the work the undergraduate Chapter is doing is phenomenal. Our Chapter works with Big Brothers Big Sisters of West Alabama, and 10 of our members will serve as Big Brothers over the next year. Additionally, three brothers were recently tapped in the Jason's Senior Men's Honorary. Congratulations to David Cranz '23, Alex Hall '23, and Jack Strubel '23 for their accomplishments in representing Alabama Beta throughout campus. Both the undergraduate Chapter and Alumni Volunteer Corporation are still looking for ways to reconnect with alumni. Undergraduates will be looking to update contact information to help keep alumni informed on upcoming events. With the updated contact information, alumni will have the means to support the undergraduates as well. Members are always seeking mentorship from alumni, especially as they kickstart their careers. If you are interested in becoming a career mentor, please let me know. Additionally, we are still planning Alabama Beta Chapter's centennial, scheduled for 2027. Even though the event is five years away, we are thrilled to celebrate brotherhood with this longstanding tradition of Alabama Beta. Be on the lookout for more information on the event! If you have any ideas regarding the centennial or would like to help the development and planning of our events, we strongly encourage you to reach out with suggestions and insight. We have plenty to look forward to this next year, and we hope to see everyone back in the Chapter House once the fall semester begins!
