Alabama Beta taking on their new philanthropy endeavor with Black Warrior Riverkeepers. These men are nature boys through and through! SIGMA PHI EPSILON University of Alabama P.O. Box 442100 Lawrence, KS 66044-2100 Address Service Requested ALABAMA BETA s THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA SIGMA PHI EPSILON A labama Beta is fortunate to have welcomed 47 new brothers since last fall, four of whom were honored with the Alabama Beta Balanced Man Scholarship: Brody Bean '25, Mason Whiteside '25, JT Muscarello '25, and Garrett Hodges '25. Brody is a marketing major from Jacksonville, Alabama. With a sister that had already spent four years at the University of Alabama and being only a two-hour drive from campus, Brody felt his choice was already made before he even stepped on campus. When going through recruitment, Brody enjoyed the commitment to academics he was shown as well as the immediate and welcoming connections he made with older brothers. Combined, these attributes of Alabama Beta made the decision much easier for him. Brody felt as if he was "already a member" during recruitment, and he has enjoyed his decision to join SigEp. Mason is a finance major from the suburbs of St. Louis, Missouri. When asked about his decision to come to Alabama, Mason noted, "Where I am from (O'Fallon), people tend to stick together and go to the University of Missouri or Missouri State University. I had made a decision pretty early about wanting to go out-of-state to meet all kinds of new people. Needless to say, my visit to Alabama overwhelmed me with positive emotions, so after that weekend of familiarizing myself with the university, I couldn't see myself anywhere else." Mason joined SigEp because he wanted to surround himself with people that valued their academics, and the recruitment committee gave him the impression that this was exactly what he was in search of. Mason also added, "Who wouldn't want to root for the tide?" JT is a finance major from Chicagoland, in the suburb of Barrington. He chose the University of Alabama for a great school culture and great education that was covered by a scholarship. When looking for a group of men who encompassed his ideal values in a fraternity, JT found all that and more. "I looked no further than Alabama Beta," he explained. Garrett is a computer engineering major from Lewisberry, Pennsylvania. During his initial visit at the university, Garrett was primarily focused on Alabama due to the scholarship opportunity, but once he visited campus and experienced the southeastern atmosphere, he knew his mind was made up. When asked about his decision to join SigEp, Garrett elaborated, "When I met the men of Alabama Beta, I realized how much of a positive impact SigEp could have on my college experience through supporting my academic success and enhancing my social life. These interactions made me want to be a part of the tight-knit brotherhood that was clearly present to me as someone who knew absolutely no one at this university coming into it." We look forward to the success of all four recipients and wish for the success of all 47 of our new members as they grow as contributing members of the Chapter and as men. O ver the past year, brothers of Alabama Beta have been involved with the Black Warrior Riverkeepers in maintaining the waterways of the greater Tuscaloosa area. Helping with over five cleanups of various creeks, streams, and areas near the Black Warrior River, our brothers have contributed time and energy, clearing nearly 2,000 pounds of litter. It has been great to spend our Sunday afternoons working within the community and around the University of Alabama. Not only do our brothers have an opportunity to spend some time together in the beautiful Alabama weather, but we also find ourselves making a vast difference as we clean up the local environment and water sources for many Tuscaloosa residents. Our brothers have greatly enjoyed working with the organization over the past spring and fall semesters, and we plan on continuing to assist in the maintenance of Tuscaloosa's water network in the future.
