OREGON BETA HEARTBEAT p. 2 Dedication and Determination Leads to Masters Championship Celebrating the Hard Work of Rich Suddock '84 R ich Suddock '84 was crowned world champion for his age group (55-59) in the 2022 Masters World Cup in the cross-country ski races held in Canmore, Alberta, Canada, in early March. Rich competed in the freestyle (aka skate) technique at both the 10K and 30K distance races. He finished first in the 30K and, two days later, finished fourth in the men's 10K. When the world events are held in North America, the USA Masters Nationals are held concurrently; Rich's fourth-place finish in the 10K was the top American finisher, which earned him the title of U.S. National Champion at that distance. Over the past several years, Rich has put in 15 hours a week in a variety of training disciplines— over 750 hours a year—in preparation for just four hours of official Masters World Cup racing. He is now back home in Anchorage and will begin preparing for the 2023 Masters World Cup in Seefeld, Austria. Congratulations, world champ! W hile resting peacefully and surrounded by family, Brian Bell entered Chapter Eternal the evening of Thursday, April 21, after complications stemming from a two-year fight with stage IV colon cancer. He was a great volunteer and brother, and he cared deeply about the Fraternity—the experience he got from it and the importance of giving back as AVC Treasurer. In his final days, Brian was able to connect with family and other loved ones and continued to show the sense of humor we all came to love. This issue of Heartbeat was already in production at the time of Brian's passing. We will celebrate Brian's life, his service to the Fraternity, and his many accomplishments in the fall issue.
