Page 5 Sigma Phi Epsilon L ast November, Florida Alpha hosted our annual philanthropy, Surf Frenzy. This annual dance competition, where the entire Chapter and numerous sororities attend to cheer on each team's dancing, raises money for Florida Diabetes Camp, an educational and enriching camp for children with Type 1 diabetes. Florida Alpha raises money through fundraising, selling merchandise, and the event itself. Small groups of brothers are paired with sororities across campus as coaches to choreograph dances and collect donations in the months leading up to the main event. While the main goal of this event is to raise money for Florida Diabetes Camp, it accomplishes so much more. Coaches for each team not only become closer to their fellow brothers, but they also meet many new people throughout campus. "Surf Frenzy was a great opportunity for my brothers and me to not only raise money for Florida Diabetes Camp, but also to establish lasting relations with nearly every sorority on campus," Pat Hladun '25 said. "Personally, I met numerous lovely young ladies, many of whom I keep in contact with regularly. There's nothing better than a little friendly competition with the guys I'll call brothers for life. Surf Frenzy was a great opportunity for me during my first semester, and I am looking forward to participating again in the years to come." This year's event was a huge success. With last year's event being exclusively online, Connor Glass '23, the Surf Frenzy chairman for 2021, worked to ensure the in-person return went off without a hitch. Zach Karpinski '22 was the MC for the event, cracking jokes and keeping the crowd entertained in between dances. Held at Knockin' Boots, a concert venue in Downtown Gainesville, and judged by Brothers Glass, Evan Savage '22, and Matthew Cinesi '21, the teams were scored based on their dances and fundraising. With the help of multiple sororities and the hard work of our brothers, we raised over $3,300. After an amazing 2021 turnout, every brother is excited for what next year will bring. "Bringing Surf Frenzy back to a live show was a huge success," Connor said. "The next step is to increase our efforts on the fundraising front and crush next semester's goal." We are looking for great stories from those college years for our chapter history book. Photos would make the stories even more special (and in some cases, more believable)! Submitted material must be appropriate. Send your materials to Jeff Wilson '76 via email to keysdog21@gmail.com by August 1, 2022.
