2 N ot everyone has guidance in choosing the right fraternity for them as a freshman. Fortunately for Scott Mach '78, he was pointed toward Sigma Chi by an older friend from high school. "He suggested that I visit the Sigma Chi house. I heard it was a great place—and I didn't know anything else—so I decided to check it out!" That positive first impression led to Scott's initiation in the chapter, and he later served as a pledge class president. Fulfilling the role gave him a better understanding of how to serve as a leader and get along with a group of people. "I hadn't lived with a group of people before, and you learn a lot about cooperation when you live with a group of guys," Scott said. "There's a lot of give and take, and you have to learn how to coexist with different people." Scott played baseball at K-State while he worked toward a degree in journalism. He later studied law at the University of Kansas and is cur- rently a lawyer at the Popham Law Firm in Kansas City, Missouri. It was the first position he held after law school, and he has worked with the firm for nearly 42 years. "I do mostly injury law from the plaintiff side, and that's helped me be more involved in the community. I've held positions such as chairman of the board for Kansas City Red Cross and president of the Mercury Club, which is a men's luncheon club here in Kansas City." Scott and his wife of 35 years are fortunate to have all three of their children and their four grandchildren living nearby in Kansas City. One of his sons teaches high school English, while the other works with Scott in his law office and recently became a partner at his firm. Meanwhile, their daughter works for VML Advertising. Two of Scott's three children attended K-State, and they try to visit every year for events like football games. "My wife was a Pi Phi at KU and our daughter was a Pi Phi at K-State, so there's a lot of Greek in our background!" Scott keeps in touch with his brothers from college through a group chat, and they often enjoy ballgames and drinks together. "It's important to use the fraternity experience as a fun time in college, but also to keep your connections for business and social reasons. Anything you might do to help the community or help your fellow people … I think the Sigma Chi house prepares you for that pretty well." Decades later, Scott cherishes those lifelong relationships and friendships that helped him become the man he is today. Learning to coexist and work alongside Sigma Chi brothers prepared him for life after college, and Scott is proud to know Sigma Chi was the right house for him.
