SANTA CLARA (AP) — Safety Donte Whitner has already spoken to San Francisco 49ers teammate Ahmad Brooks ahead of training camp about the importance of making smart decisions off the football field. Last week, the Santa Clara County district attorney's office declined to pursue assault charges against Brooks because of insufficient evidence in an investigation into allegations that the linebacker repeatedly hit teammate Lamar Divens on the head with a beer bottle in a June altercation at Brooks' home. While Brooks wasn't made available to media Wednesday when veterans for the Super Bowl runner-up Niners reported to team headquarters, Whitner said he expects good things from Brooks and hopes everyone can move forward without this distraction. ''He's tremendously sorry for what he did, anybody would be embarrassed,'' Whitner said. ''I talked to Ahmad. He explained the situation, I gave him my input on it and we left it at that. ... He just has to move on and make sure he continues to make the right choices from this point on, he'll be OK.'' General manager Trent Baalke wouldn't say whether Brooks might face disciplinary action from the team, and it is unclear what action the NFL might take, if any. ''Once again, the discussion we have with Ahmad or any of our players is within the team, within the building,'' Baalke said. Brooks was never arrested. According to police, he hit Divens with the bottle three times and then punched him in the face during an early morning argument June 8. Divens was left with a 3-inch cut on his forehead, according to police statements. The police reports also said Brooks, Divens and others had been drinking and went to a bar before returning to Brooks' house. Divens pretended to throw Brooks' keys in the grass, though he had actually held onto the keys, prompting the attack, according to the reports. Investigators were told Brooks was intoxicated and had threatened to get a gun. ''You talk to those guys pretty much one on one, private conversations, you don't really put it out there for everybody to see or everybody to know,'' Whitner said. ''It's just choices that you make outside of here. It's a bad choice that he made. He's going to have to pay for that. We don't know what it's going to be yet. He understands (making) good choices. (AP) — Keith Olbermann isn't planning to talk politics on his new late-night sports show, although he will make an exception for a certain New York mayoral candidate. Asked about Anthony Weiner's new sexting scandal and the candidate's online alias ''Carlos Danger,'' Olbermann joked that Weiner ''stole a great fake hotel sign-in name'' that he would have liked to use. He told the Television Critics Association summer meeting on Wednesday, ''I guarantee you Carlos Danger will wind up in the first show.'' He added, ''The idea that anyone could call themselves, under any circumstances and for any reason, Carlos Danger is a tribute to something about him.'' Olbermann's selftitled show originates from Times Square studios in New York and debuts on Aug. 26 on ESPN2. Airing at 11 p.m. EDT, it will focus on the day's sports topics through a mix of commentary, interviews, contributors, panel discussions and highlights. Olbermann said there is no content clause in his contract that would prevent him from talking politics, something he did for eight years as a primetime host on MSNBC and for a year on Current TV — two stints that ended poorly. He quit MSNBC and was taken off the air at Current TV and later sued. ''It's been wonderful not talking politics,'' he said. ''It was a lot of work and it took a lot out of me.'' Olbermann had his first rehearsal on Wednesday. The job brings him back to ESPN, where he worked from 1992-97 with some controversy. ''It will be a sportscast with my stamp on it,'' he said, adding that plans include a segment on the Worst Person in the Sports World and clips from his previous life on ESPN. ''It's important to acknowledge I was there before,'' he said, but at same time, ''I don't think the audience is that interested in hearing me say, 'Good evening, I'm sorry, and proceeding like that.''' Crisp's homer gives A's the edge HOUSTON (AP) — The Oakland Athletics weren't concerned when they were down by two runs entering the seventh inning on Wednesday against the Houston Astros. They hit three homers after the seventh inning in the first two games of the series combined and saw no reason their late flashes of power would stop in this one. Coco Crisp hit a tworun homer in Oakland's three-run seventh inning to help the Athletics to a 4-3 win over the Astros on Wednesday. ''What it does is it gives us the confidence that we can come back,'' manager Bob Melvin said of the late homers. ''And then we know that when we get a guy on base we're one hit away from being in a better position than we were.'' The A's trailed by two before an RBI double by Eric Sogard with one out cut the deficit to 3-2 and chased starter Bud Norris. Crisp launched his home run off Travis Blackley (1-1) to the Crawford Boxes in left field to put Oakland on top. ''I don't think we rely on home runs, we just got up there and battle,'' Crisp said. ''It just so happens that's how this series broke down. NFL Raiders arrive at training camp without top picks NAPA (AP) — There were two notable absences when the two buses filled with rookies, undrafted free agents and other young players arrived at Oakland Raiders training camp. While most of the players have arrived for a one-month stay in wine country, Oakland's top two draft picks were not on the buses from the team facility on Wednesday. First-round pick cornerback D.J. Hayden and second-round pick offensive lineman Menelik Watson are the only members of Oakland's 10-player draft class who have yet to sign their contracts. With practice not starting until Friday, there is still plenty of time to get those deals done without the players missing any work, although it remains to be seen whether Hayden will be able to practice right away even if he does sign a deal. Hayden's offseason got cut short when he needed surgery in late May to remove scar tissue from the abdominal region. That operation came months after a near-fatal practice injury that ended his college career at Houston early. Hayden was rushed into surgery last November for a tear of the inferior vena cava, the large vein that carries blood from the lower half of the body to the heart, after a collision in practice. Doctors had to cut through Hayden's sternum to save him. The injury is 95 percent fatal in the field, according to doctors, and is most commonly associated with high-speed motor vehicle accidents. The Raiders still selected Hayden 12th overall with their first first-round pick since 2010 after doctors cleared him to resume playing football. The team said at the time of the offseason surgery that Hayden was expected to be back for camp but nothing will be official until after he signs his contract. The rest of the rookie class has signed, including fourth-round quarterback Tyler Wilson, who finalized his deal on Tuesday and got to camp with the rest of his teammates a day later. ''I knew it was going to be worked out,'' Wilson said. ''Glad we got that finished. Now it's about moving on toward camp and figuring out a way to win games. So, that's the exciting part. We're all ready to move forward and get things going.'' The Raiders are in the second year of a major rebuilding project under general manager Reggie See CAMP, page 2B
