Art is big here, and Fayetteville is
committed to it. The city just earmarked
more than $219,000 in the 2022 budget
to create an arts and culture program.
Included will be programming for the
new Arts Corridor being planned in
Fayetteville's Downtown/Entertainment
District, which will include vibrant
cultural attractions and destinations
along a 50-acre tract along the
Razorback Greenway.
And the Fayetteville Chamber of
Commerce is no exception to the
visual art boom. Art abounds in and
around the chamber offices. All of the
employees, in fact, are artists. (More on
page 8.)
The Chamber's foray into the
art world started back in 2015,
when president Steve Clark asked
students at Fayetteville High School
to paint a mural surrounding the
courtyard outside the building. It's a
contemporary abstract work, featuring
Fayetteville Bulldog colors of purple and
white.
"I asked them to include words
that described Fayetteville. They came
up with: 'progressive,' 'active,' 'local,'
'artistic,' 'conscious,' 'diverse,' 'beautiful,'
and of course, 'funky.' I thought that was
perfect."
Then, students from Vandergriff
Elementary School created a second
mural in the courtyard, featuring
sunflowers painted with their
handprints.
