A t the Opening Session of the 2021 Grand Chapter Conclave in Denver, Colo., the Fraternity recognized its outstanding chapters with its prestigious Buchanan Cup for Chapter Excellence. Oregon Alpha's undergraduate attendees, James Cross '24, Kellar McCarthy '23, and Eric Watt '23, have had hardships to overcome these last two years. e challenges they faced included the chapter house closing during the Spring 2020 quarter, hosting summer recruitment virtually and with campus and community restrictions, and only having 35 men live in the chapter house during the 2020–21 school year. At the Conclave, AVC President Gavin Brown (91-1389) sat with a collection of volunteers, including AVC member Ken Maddox (75- 962). Elsewhere in attendance was John Sandstrom (77-1018), who was attending as a member of the Florida Alpha (University of Florida) AVC, and the Fraternity's professional staff members, Jamison Shields (17- 2268) and Britton Blanchard (21-2495). Britton is beginning his first year as Regional Director. Highlights of the event included: • e recognition of Maine Alpha (University of Maine) for its 7th straight Buchanan Cup; the 29 undergraduate attendees from the chapter heartily voiced their excitement. • Nebraska Alpha (University of Nebraska) continued its record and performance by adding a $3 million renovation of their chapter house to their list of accomplishments. • Oklahoma Alpha (Oklahoma State) continued its return to prominence with its "5-peat" award. Having recently moved into its new chapter house, many staff members (who know all the chapters well) believe Oklahoma Alpha to be SigEp's most outstanding chapter. And finally … waiting creates tension … • Oregon Alpha was recognized with its 26th Buchanan Cup! Nebraska Alpha follows in second with a record 23 Buchanan Cup awards. is is no surprise to many; however, our competition increases. Each Conclave, Oregon Alpha must confirm its tradition while showing new efforts in developing men as they are on campus and as they begin their careers. Gavin Brown noted: "As a first-time attendee, the spirit and resources available at Conclave were impressive. Many times, Brother Ulysses Dubach (1918-001) was mentioned for his influence, and his values are still referenced as foundational in SigEp. SigEp's leadership in Greek Life is formidable. And it was fun." Congratulations again to Oregon Alpha on their 26th Buchanan Cup! If you stop by the chapter house the next time you are on campus, you'll find Buchanan Cups on display. OREGON ALPHA WINS 26TH OREGON ALPHA WINS 26TH BUCHANAN CUP! BUCHANAN CUP!
